Super Mario Sunshine

In my opinon, Super Mario Sunshine was underrated. I loved it more than Super Mario Galaxy! The only flaw in my opinon was no Luigi. They should really make a sequel. I loved the relaxing resort atmosphere. I also loved the levels where you had to jump around a platforming course without the help of FLUDD. They should make an entire Mario game concisting of levels just like that. Who else liked this underrated game?

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I loved Sunshine heaps. One of my favorite 'Cube games.
I think one reason most people don't like it is the lack of level variety-- 90% of them are island resort levels. But I liked the summer setting of the game a lot. It was different.

The game needs some more love (or at the very least, some less hate).

I don't think it's underrated, SSBM, Wind Waker, and Sunshine are basically the games that make the gamecube what it is today.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine! I loved this game! Here's how it goes in terms of tiers:

Sunshine >>>>> Galaxy ------ 64 DS >>>>>>>> 64 Original
(The straight line represents equality)

A lot of people say this game is bad. I agree, it was highly underrated. But it still continues to live on as one of the greatest Mario games of all time, as well as one of the greatest Gamecube games of all time.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

Sunshine was a cool game. However, its the only 3D Mario i have never beat! I still havent beat it. Its a bit tough for me atleast. Its those void levels. You know the ones where FLUDD isnt available? Man those are tricky!
The graphics were cool and i love love love the Hotel levels! I pop it in at times and just have fun with it even though ive never been able to reach Bowser.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is a fantastic game. It's actually challenging, which is a big plus. The levels are also mostly designed exceptionally well. Oh, and the water graphics and physics were absolutely outstanding. I know of no other game that has managed to pull off such beautiful looking water.

I suppose my biggest complaints about it are its soundtrack, which I found relatively lacklustre, and its occasionally sloppy camera system.

I loved the game. Its one of my favorite cube games. Although I think its the worst out of the 3 3D mario games, I loved the levels and atmosphere the most of the series. It was also a pretty hard game to complete, had quite some trouble with those blue coins and some secret shines.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I love it, but I think it's highly underrated. The fact that it doesn't take place in the Mushroom Kingdom causes some people to just sort of brush it off, I think, but I find that some of the new things it experimented with, like more vertical platforming, and hovering, brought a lot of interesting gameplay to the Super Mario 64 framework. It probably lacked some impact due to other games doing similar things prior to it, but it really appeals to that hardcore Nintendo fan in me that enjoys difficult games with massive amounts of content.

Yeah, Sunshine is by far my favourite Mario game. The island resort theme, the sunny summer feeling, it just made me feel good.

The other(minor) flaw I forgot to point out was that, although Delfino Plaza was a great overworld, I wish you could go into the buildings.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

Nintendo is one of those companies that has very few "bad" products, especially in the Mario series.

However, I liked the game quite a bit less than Galaxy, and I have reason.

1. Lack of level variety, and lack of main levels (there were only like ten main levels, if I remember correctly).

2. As a platformer (and a Mario one at that), there was much of the game that wasn't platforming-based. For example, much of the bosses (and quite a lot of the obstacles) mainly required you to aim FLUDD, rather than use platforming to beat them.

3. The soundtrack was somewhat lacklustre.

4. The fact that much of the game was so un-linear and not straightforward. As a platformer (and a Mario one at that), the difficulty should not come from attempting to figure out what to do (we have Zelda for that, also might be a reason why some of you Zelda fans prefer Sunshine over Galaxy), but from actualy doing it.

5. IMO, the game had quite a few presentation flaws. The opening cutscene was rather boring, and there was too much of a story for a Mario game (it had a plot twist. That is too much of a story for Mario)

6. The lack of an epic final battle. Bowser is in a jacuzzi. Wow.

7. This one's just me, but I thought Sunshine was a little too hard.

8. The lack of a long jump. Would have made the game far easier if there was one.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

The best Mario game i have played. It's one of my favs for the gamecube and one of the best. Every boss battle was fantastic. I really enjoyed the final battle with Bowser in a Jacuzzi lol. But really, its difficulty was perfect and the summer theme was what made it a great game. FLUDD was a very creative idea as a character and item. I hope a similar-like game comes out. Super Mario Sunshine 2 would'ave been a great idea.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I liked Sunshine a bit more than Galaxy. FLUDD and the setting of being on a tropical resort was very well done. Levels were awesome, and I also found a bit more challenging than the ones in Galaxy.

Both great mario games, but Sunshine will be taking the slight lead on this one.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

It was alright. It didn't stand out for me, but it didn't suck. Music was okay. Visually, it was very pretty, especially the sea. The whole graffiti thing, I found kinda lame. FLUDD's voice creeped me out xD. Some of the stages were a great challenge. I wished Delfino Plaza was bigger. Wasn't memorable, but it killed time and gave me an excuse not to study for exams.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

It's really great but it's a low tier Mario game.

There simply wasn't enough variety in the missions, all of the chase shadow mario levels were the same and they weren't that good in the first place. The game repeated bosses as well.

The FLUDD-less levels were the best thing about it.

The ironic thing is, that was Super Mario Galaxy.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

The set up of the shines is non-preferable, in my opinion. Eight typical stars, a secret star, a "red coin" secret star, and a 100-coin star, per world. All other stars are achieved by collecting blue coins.

The blue-coin system starts off REALLY fun and satisfying, as you truly feel like you're experiencing every inch of each world's level design, but eventually as you're approaching the 100-shine mark, it starts to get old.

The improvement that Galaxy made over Sunshine is that it became more straightforward while also improving in variety. Blue coins and secret stars left Sunshine feeling like a bloated experience, where Galaxy changed things up by giving you a lot more levels to play with just a few goal-oriented stars each. Galaxy stayed fresher longer than Sunshine because of this.

All this said, I do feel that Sunshine is an underrated game. It definitely had some very fun exploration-based platforming, and I do believe that FLUDD was a well-used an interesting addition, regardless of what others have to say. On top of that, it provided a good level of challenge for a 3D platformer, which is something I appreciate.

I think I got around 60 of those Shine bastards. Never did go back through and just beat the game, got tired of it I guess.

I thought Sunshine was okay. It's a good game in the sense that there are worse games. There are also far better ones; Including most other Mario games.
