I think one reason most people don't like it is the lack of level variety-- 90% of them are island resort levels. But I liked the summer setting of the game a lot. It was different.

The game needs some more love (or at the very least, some less hate).
Agreed. It was a total blast. Even fooling around was fun. I hated the levels without FLUDD but that was simple because I really sucked at Mario games back then (was just moving from computer FPS to consoles) but I soon mastered it. And beating those levels was a very nice sense of accomplishment. I was only missing like 12 blue coins (I had every star) and walkthroughs couldn't help me (hadn't used them before that) because of the sheer number of blue coins in the game. I think it was more fun the super mario 64. The controls were perfect if nothing else.

Why yes it was the true sequel to SM64, and yet the only one too.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I loved Sunshine, and I really don't understand a lot of the popular complaints about it... Beautiful visuals, bouncy music, a great summery atmosphere, tight gameplay... I still think Galaxy is in a league of its own, but Sunshine really deserves more recognition.

Yeah, Sunshine was underrated. I do think Galaxy was better, though.

Ummm, are you sure it was just those three?

Anyway, while not as good as SM64 or Galaxy imo, Sunshine was still a great game and in definitely underrated.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

It's good to see some people who actually like this game. I always hear nothing but people saying how much it sucked. I loved that game so much, I wish i still had it. Just the atmosphere was cool and relaxing, and it added a new twist to Mario. it is for sure my favorite mario game. And yet, I did not care for galaxy at all. I do not see why people rave about this game and its "originality" what was original about it? It was so incredibly boring to me, and just seemed like any old mario game, I played for a few hours tried to enjoy it, but got very bored and returned it the same day. It was pretty, I'll give it that, but thats it. So could someone please explain to me what was so damn fantastic about it?

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I enjoyed sunshine, it had the same ability to do absurdly complicated jumps and get to high up locations with skill, something not shared by Galaxy. I love it's playability, and the innovations to the Mario series. I also enjoyed the water graphics quite a bit.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I hated how Galaxy was so linear. Mario 64 got it right. It was how a platforming adventure should be. Sunshine built on that, and added more to it, with bigger worlds and more interesting jumps from the FLUDD. The difficulty was also superb. It wasn't so hard that it was frustrating, but it was hard enough that it posed a decent challenge that could take a few tries and leave you satisfied afterwords.
Galaxy almost completely nixed the exploration aspect that 64 and Sunshine had, and it was also way too easy. It wasn't challenging at all. The only things that came close to challenging were the no hit Boss battles. It was definitely fun, but it was nowhere near as good as Sunshine or 64.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I loved Sunshine. The whole tropical theme was actually the greatest part for me. It was very creative and those challenge levels without FLUDD were awesome. Now, it doesn't even come close to the greatness of Galaxy, but it is pretty much par with the original 64 one.

I've been wondering why I didn't enjoy Galaxy as much as, well, any other Mario game. And you listed every reason and I now see why I didn't enjoy the game. So when people ask me why I didn't have fun with it (or not a lot of fun) I'll know. Thanks

Eight.

I'm going to go ahead and hop on Double A's bandwagon on this one.
Sunshine was a great game, I enjoyed it while I played it, but Galaxy completely left it in the dust--and when I played Galaxy I started thinking of complaints about Sunshine that I didn't even know I had.

I really like that Galaxy brought Mario back to its roots; it feels like Super Mario Bros. 3 in 3D. Mario 64 was an excellent game, but it was a bit of an anomaly among the Mario series because Mario was never about exploration, it was about getting from point A to point B. Sunshine magnified this issue by becoming even more exploration-oriented, and then, of course, Galaxy fixed that.

I disagree, after Super Mario 64, it all changed.

I enjoyed both Galaxy and Sunshine.

But, in my opinion, there are slight aspects that made Sunshine better.

Wrong. Galaxy was far more of a platformer than 64 or Sunshine will ever be, because of that linearity. We have Zelda for exploration, don't bring it into Mario. Mario was never about exploration, it was always about getting from A to B, where the difficulty always arose from actually doing it, not from trying to figure it out.

IMO, Galaxy was slightly easier than it should have been, but Sunshine was far too hard.

This doesn't make sense, since Galaxy was far more like the 2D Marios (which comprises the vast majority of Mario platformers) than 64 or Sunshine. If you enjoyed Galaxy less than 64 or Sunshine, chances are you didn't like the 2D Marios as much either, and prefer Zelda to Mario overall. Therefore you didn't really enjoy "any other Mario game" that much.

Think about it.

64 = SMB
Sunshine = SMB2
Galaxy = SMB3

Galaxy 2 = SMW?

Boo hoo.
It wasn't impossible. The difficulty was fine. Good enough for the main game, challenging for the rest of it.

Re: Super Mario Sunshine

I think he's implying that SMB revolutionized platforming, SMB2 was the black sheep, and SMB3 is the one that is most liked, and he's comparing them to the 3d Marios because they're sorta similar that way. Plus, SMG2 has Yoshi, so SMW connection? Not that it means much.

BTW, I've played SM64 and SMG, but not SMS, so I guess Sunshine is automatically my least favorite of the 3 main 3d platformers.

That makes more sense then, but it still doesn't really have any bearing on anything.

But Sunshine also had Yoshi...

I actually haven't played Galaxy yet.
It's even sitting upstairs in the cabinet. I dunno why, I haven't gotten the urge to touch it.
