Question about RE

I don't know if I had to make a whole thread over this.

I was told that I should try out the Resident Evil series, I figure why not. It seems cool, but I wonder one question, do I need to start from RE1? Or can I just play a random one. I was told by a couple of friends that RE4 is the best and I should play that first.

I just want your opinions.

Re: Question about RE

It doesn't really matter. Like I was saying in the other RE thread, in the older games, the story doesn't really matter, unless you really care about it. I don't suggest you play 2, 3 or code veronica first though. Start with either 0, 1, or 4. They all provide good starting points so you arn't completely lost.

Re: Question about RE

The way the games play is all something to look into. The controls are harder to use the older the version is (they do update the games from time to time. I think the GCN has a remake of 1) and thus the games are hard/easy depending on controls. I'd say 4 is an okay starting point. Easy controls and the plot isn't too demanding as to what you know about the ones before it (though you should look into Leon's background a bit).

Re: Question about RE

I recommend starting out with the REmake for Gamecube (Note that the title is Resident Evil, NOT REmake). If you want to skip 0, 2, 3, and Veronica to get to 4, that should be fine. At least you begin with the initial survival horror experience.

EDIT:

Apparently, the REmake has been ported to the Wii. Part of the Umbrella Archives collection or something like that...

Re: Question about RE

You should play Remake, 2 and Veronica at least to get the jist of the storyline but there all worth playing, 4 and 5 are pretty much a diffrent genre/game, having little to do with the actual series.

Re: Question about RE

Tough call.

If you have an open mind, I'd suggest playing REmake first and then moving to RE2. You'll have to downgrade in the departments of graphics and overall presentation, but regardless of that you'll still be playing the two most highly-recommended "classic" RE games in the order that they take place in the story. Either that, or you could start with RE2 first, and then go back to the REmake. You'll lose things like the multiple scenarios, but you'll gain things like the improved horror atmosphere.

Another way to approach it would be to play the REmake first, and then RE0. Though, admittedly, I think this would be easy for me because I love all the RE games, but for someone who's new, it may be different since RE0 is usually considered to be a bottom-tier Resident Evil experience. But, that's all in the eye of the beholder. I, personally, enjoy RE0 more than Code Veronica and maybe even RE5, but for me it didn't touch REmake, RE2, or RE3.

Either way you cut it, I think if you want to "try out" the Resident Evil series, you should give at least two of the classic style games a chance (one of them being the REmake. This is mandatory!), and then if you like them, play the rest. If you don't, then skip the rest and move onto RE4.

Re: Question about RE

I started with RE4, then played RE (GCN) I recommend this order.

Re: Question about RE

I played the games pretty backwards--I did RE4,RE2, and Code Veronica. I played part of 0, but it sucked and really didn't contribute to the story. The first one certainly sets up many events that are continued into the later games, as does the 2nd. Code Veronica I enjoyed very much, but to me it seemed like more of a side thing as far as the story went. But maybe they'll continue that tangent in RE6, I dunno.

The controls are very confusing at first, and kind of wonky, but after you get used to them, you stop noticing.

With Darkside Chronicles, though, that should clear up any story details better than the original 2nd and Code Veronica did, if you're interested at all in the whole plotline.
