It brought only a couple new ideas to the franchise, and nothing that was never-before-seen in gaming.

So, yes. It was traditional. Damn good, but not inventive.

Ocarina of Time?

Z-targeting and context-sensitive button says hi. I think "massive 3D overworld" also left a greeting, but I'm not sure.

Back on topic, Galaxy's "Comet Obvservatory" made for a quite soothing overworld lullaby.

Re: Most Epic Overworld Music

There was a form of Z-targeting in Tomb Raider, while an overworld could be found in Final Fantasy VII.

OoT polished both of those ideas and executed them far better, but it didn't invent them.

The overworld of FFVII and OoT represent two ENTIRELY different concepts of overworld.

You're contradicting your own thread title (namely "epic").

Cmon, even if it was unpolished, Tomb Raider should still have gotten credit for inventing the function if it had it first.

Also, context-sensitive buttons.

Since Terranigma's overworld theme was already posted I can only supply the equally awesome underworld theme:

FFVII still had a huge overworld before OoT. OoT's was better and more detailed, but it wasn't the first game to do something with the idea in 3D.

Why is Columbus regarded as the first foreigner to reach North America when he wasn't?

Because people are stupid, and don't do enough research.

You're right, it should have. But since OoT did it better, people tend to remember it more.

Resident Evil, Mission: Impossible, Tomb Raider, even Goldeneye all had this to some degree, among other games I'm sure.

Making the established formula of that series work amazingly in a 3D environment? It'd call that revolutionary for the franchise.

Re: Most Epic Overworld Music

That's not being innovative for gaming, though, unless you want to stretch what "Innovation" is.

And that's a very slipperly slope right there, because with that kind of thinking, games that are innovative aren't that rare anymore.

Re: Most Epic Overworld Music

OoT wasn't THE first to have a 3d Overworld, but it was ONE of the first to have it, And I dont think alot of the younger members can really understand the transition of 2d to 3d and FMVs for the very first time when they never existed before and the huge graphical leeps, Seeing Hyrule for the first time in 3d, ever, a whole new concept, and the better quality overfield music playing also a massive leep, was pretty pant-wetting by any standards.

Anyway I would chip in FF9, Great locations such as Lindblum, Good music score, good overworld music and the introduction to the overworld after Dali was amazing where it was on autopilot and the world was alive with ships causally going about and landing and taking off.
