I also find it funny that while City folk is a wii game, even an n64 game did more. The n64 game had a larger town, more stuff laying around your town, (like a ball, leaves, ect) more neighbors, and neighbors that actually did stuff.(like, they actually fished on the tourny's) Why didn't they have things like that in CF?
Wasnt that the one that became Animal Crossing for the Gamecube?

Yes indeedy.
Although the GameCube one got even more spruced up. It added the Museum (this is why you had to send letters before you got the fossils back-- Blathers originally didn't exist), it added the Able Sisters, and some other things like that.

EDIT: By the way, I heard the Japan-only enhanced version got outdoor furniture!

Ahh i was wondering why you had to send letters. That was the only thing that really bothered me about the fossil system in that game.

Yeah, Blathers was added only as a means of displaying your collection (I assume they didn't have the means to change the system).
Thankfully they later let him do it for you.

I'm not sure about City Folk, but you could still wake up Nook in Wild World. You can also visit Resetti in the City sometimes in City Folk.

I didn't own the GameCube or N64 versions, so you must be able to. Just hit Nook's Cranny at night with a spade, or something along those lines.

Re: Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Why it Doesn't Work

City Folk is an okay game, but a horrible excuse for a sequel.

I mean, going from the GCN version to the DS version made many more major positive changes than going from the DS to the Wii. It's rather ridiculous when a CONSOLE game fails to deliver more than a portable game, wouldn't you say?

Now I was not exactly content with WW either, to be honest. The GCN version was the best. But WW, despite quite a few shortcomings (in other words stupid decisions), added essential things like hairstyles, accessories, and Wi-Fi. Plus the house size in WW was a great upgrade. (Not having four houses was an understandable thing considering it was a DS game.)

What did CF add of that magnitude? Absolutely nothing. All it did was go backwards. I mean you had the holidays added back (although they aren't as fun as they were in the GCN version), but that was it. That was the only big good thing added to this game, and it was only an improvement on a stupid decision made for WW.

CF just added to the stupid decisions made... What changes were major, were on the negative side. The house size was decreased. I know people try to make up excuses for Nintendo on that one, but none of them truly justify the decrease in the house size. Instead of the nice mansion from WW, we're stuck with the old house from the GCN version. It worked back then, but after WW we are accustomed to the nice mansion. What should have been done here is they brought back WW's house size and brought the basement too. Everybody would have been happy, but I guess Nintendo didn't care at all.

They also got rid of animal pictures. But maybe that's actually a positive thing in the end: In CF, animals are even more cardboard cutouts than in the past games. They'll say the same thing to you a million times in a row. There's no point in even talking to them anymore. You can't ask them for errands at all anymore. So now you just have to hope that they'll ask you for one. In the process of talking to them you'll end up hearing the same thing over and over so it's really not worth your time.

So yeah, truth is we probably wouldn't be getting the animal pictures if they were there. Nobody's going to care to talk to the animals in CF since they are dumbed down and no fun anymore.

The city? Pointless gimmick that actually backfires in the end. It didn't add much new, it instead mostly (aside from the skunk) took travelers that you had to wait for and put them all in one location so you can go to them anytime you want. Replay value goes down a whole bunch there. The only plus here is that you can get your hairstyle changed from the beginning, but couldn't they have just done that without the city?

The game has made me lose all faith in Nintendo. Animal Crossing on the GCN was my favorite game for the longest time... Probably still is, but I don't play video games much anymore anyways. They're not that important to me anymore. lol AC:CF had the CHANCE to get me back into them, but no... It decided to be lazy.

There were soooo many cool features that could have been added here. Not things that would ruin the game, but things that would make the game more fun. Things like OUTDOOR FURNITURE. I've said it tons of times in my rants against AC:CF, but it just has to be said everytime. lol. Animal Forest e+ in Japan brought this idea into the series, but unfortunately we never saw it again. Never in America at all. It had a ton of potential, and if it had been vastly improved it could have made AC:CF something special. And that's just one feature they could have utilized.

Fact of the matter is, AC:CF is wasted potential. I feel really bad for my parents spending $50 on it for my birthday. It should have been given to those of us who own the past AC games for free. No joke. That's how bad it is.

No, I mean in Wild World. I'm pretty sure you could only wake Nook up in the e+ Japan version.

EDIT: Oh yeah, who else misses the campers and igloos?

Oh wait, I did emulate Animal Forest once to see what it was like. Either I did it in that, or I just watched it on YouTube. I guess you can't then!

I don't know of these campers and igloos. Christ, how much is City Folk missing?

Re: Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Why it Doesn't Work

The campers were fine, but the igloos were annoying.

The igloos were one glaring flaw with the GCN version (although sickness in WW brought the an even worse version of the flaw onto the later games... >_>). The animal would be stuck in the igloo and you could not run errands to them during that whole day.

Maybe it's not such a big deal anymore, but back then I was in like 8th grade and I didn't have much else to do other than play AC during my free time. lol. So yeah, the animal that asked you to run the errand would not be able to ask you for anymore for that entire day!

But the sickness is far worse.

The campers were the more awesome of the two-- a random villager from outside your town would set up a tent in a spot in your town, and you could go inside and chat or play games with them. That was pretty cool.

Also, I wish City Folk brought back Wild World's bottled messages.
It was funny finding those on the beach. I once got one that said simply
"Caution"

No period or anything, just "caution".
I laughed my ass off at how eerie it was. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't from another player, too.)

ME! I actually kinda liked the igloos even though if someone wanted you to do an errand involving that particular animal (in the igloo) you had to wait a day. BUT i liked the games you could play with them and get those cool items like chowder. The campers were cool too! Random animals from somewhere else and you could win items from them.

It was also pretty cool that animals that left would sometimes visit.

Those campers sound amazing, especially since you can play games.

Reading this thread, City Folk is a lot worse than I originally thought it was.

On its own? It's a good game.
Comparatively to the other two AC games?
Oh god is it worse.

Re: Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Why it Doesn't Work

Animal Tracks ruined the game for me since I run around everywhere. Now my town is close to a desert...and it isn't that pretty to look at.

I think that the city had so much potential, but it failed miserably.

Heck, everything that was added in City Folk was a good idea. It was just that the execution of it made it seem a little stale. If Nintendo had done things a little differently with their new additions such as the city, this game would have been terrific as a sequel.
