Who lets their parents control their life?......

I'm just sick of my boyfriend's parents....no let me change that, i'm sick of my boyfriend's attitude towards his parents. He thinks they have the power to control his every move. He's 16 years old! His parents can't control EVERYTHING he does!
I always feel sorry for him coz I love him but sometimes he only thinks bout THEIR opinion and doesn't even CONSIDER mine!
He's got it in his head that his life belongs to them and only them...

What i'm getting at is...does anyone agree that its right to let your parents control you're EVERY move? I don't...

Ah...sorry but you sound kind of obsessed over him. Aren't you overreacting to this?

He just sounds very faithful to his parents. Many teenagers that I come across are rude, horrible and disobedient to their parents.

Make sure you don't ruin the relationship between the boy and his parents...

I'm not sure if you're trying to say you want him to think for himself, or you would rather be the one to control his decisions and not his parents. Either way, he does need to start thinking for himself, not others. There's nothing wrong with still listening to your parents' advice at whatever age. I'm 24 and don't mind hearing out what my Dad has to say. But still, I wouldn't let him--or my partner--be the one to make all my decisions.

This is one of the silliest threads ever. Listen to your parents, they have several years of experience more than you do and are, naturally, fairly similar in intelligence. I highly doubt there is a sixteen year old on this planet that listens to his parents completely on anything slightly frivolous.

From the details you gave, it's kind of hard to understand exactly what the true situation is. I can tell you though, 16 year old is faaaar from being a fully mature adult who is able to completelycut the umbilical cord (in the figurative sense, of course). Heck, 25 years old isn't even. We all need some sort of outside influence from an older, wiser source--a voice of reason, if you will.

But sounds to me like he's a pretty good kid. It's rare to find kid who actually do listen to thier parents in this day and age. He still lives with them, he's still dependant on them, he should listen to them.

He can always break up with you, no strings attatched, but there will always be a much stronger connection between him and his parents.

Yeah! His parents are everything to him. You should respect that. You are only his girlfriend. You are not married to him, so don't try to control his every move and don't get mad that he has to follow his parents rules. The dude is only 16. I used to fight with my parents but if I could go back I would have never acted like the jerk I acted like. Parents do a lot for there kids, respect that, or grow old enough and move out!!!

Prettty much everything to say has been already, so... yeah. It seems like he's just being respectful and obeying his parents, which is pretty rare these days. Admittedly, he should respect your opinion as well, but someone should defer to his/her parents.

His parents don't have any right to control his opinions and keep such a tight leash on him. That just shows that they don't trust him.

However, one must realize two things:

1) If it weren't for your parents you wouldn't be here.

2) Your parents are probably providing EVERYTHING for you, without expecting anything in return.

Given these two things, your parents do deserve MUCH MORE respect than many of us give them.

My parents keep a very tight leash on me. They don't support me any more, but they are willing to do everything for me. So, I follow their rules when I'm in their house, and I take their advice when I'm not in their house. I have huge problems with both of them that sort of prevent a healthy relationship between me and them, but that's a different matter.

If they are "controlling", they probably have very good reason for it.

There's a difference between wise and controlling.

You haven't given us examples of what his parents do. Do they constantly check his bags/room for hidden drugs? Do they constanly drill him on what and what not to do when he goes out? Do they constantly call him every five minutes, ending it with "Be back before dinner!"?

My parents let me have leeway. They give me advice when they think I need it and it's not often. They know I'm mature enough.

Also, he's 16. Sure he can vote, drive, join the army...but can he smoke and drink legally? No. Also, a 16-year-old's brain isn't that mature. God knows I wasn't mature when I was 16.

I mean, I'm 20 now. I'm OLD enough now to start the building blocks of lung cancer that will no doubt strike when I'm an old man (smoking). Yet my brain is mature enough to know that risk if I take it. I choose not to. I would very much like to be able to breath on my own in my 80s.
