But yeah, it should be noted that the computer with AOL on it in 1994 was one that I saw in my 7th grade home tech classroom. I don't remember us having a computer at our house until approximately 1996 or '97. That thing was an antiquated word processor. We're talking black screen, green text, and printer paper with those tiny holes on the sides. I would sit at that thing all day back in 10th grade and write stories and stuff (eons before the advent of blogging, Facebook, or fan-based message boards). In 11th grade, we actually got a real computer (with Windows 95, I believe), and I remember being amazed that the word processor on this thing (Corell WordPerfect) actually looked like I was typing on a piece of paper!

At the end of 11th grade, we finally got email--namely, we got Juno (so email without the internet). You would have to dial up, then the system would retrieve your messages (as well as send any you had written) and then disconnect once it had them. We thought it was the coolest thing at the time. It wasn't until about the time that I was graduating high school that we got a fully functional dial-up internet (via AOL), and it was actually my dad who introduced me to the phenomenon of buddy lists and instant messaging. ("Wait, you mean it's like email, but...instantaneous?")

That was the end of an era, sigh...

Funny--it's had rather the opposite effect on me.

Never really looked at it like this before, but I was born when you were in 8th grade. I'm just about have your age.
