Geneticists find HIV Vaccine in our junk

I don't think the forum would allow me to post enogh awesome faces to express my feelings right now.

I was never a science student, but we have DNA that is considered junk? I'm rather intrigued as to why we have that exactly.

However, if movies serve correctly, then we're all gonna turn into mutant flesh eating super humans, and that's not good. :<

But yeah. How do they exactly plan on this working in our favour? How are we going to have this aminoglycoside injected into our junk DNAs? This whole artical makes me a bit :/. Playing with anything found in the human body makes me a bit uneasy.

So if I ever get AIDS I should poke a hole in my arm and stick my penis in it?

Does anyone else find that ironic?

I think I came up with the nerdiest way possible to explain it. You know how in the scripts for games, people will find cut content? Well our DNA is the same way. After years of genetic mutation that made us human, we have stuff left over.

I think this is great! I really don't know why people are worried about the whole Darwinian Radio thing. It's a fiction book. Shouldn't we not worry so much about what authors say and more about what Doctors and Scientists say? They're the ones with degrees in their fields.

Yeah I was curious about this. I would think, or hope, that this would be worthy of National News and much coverage. Yet this is the first time I have heard of this.(though to behonest I don't may much attention to the news...)

I don't believe this statement is founded.

I find this genuinely very interesting -- but I hope they do proper testing before going all retrovirus on this gene therapy: Noone is really sure what junk DNA does, and how it all interacts. It could have unforseen complications on any genetic variation: race, blood type. Stuff like that.

The vast majority of DNA is "Junk" DNA that has no discernible purpose. It seems to play no role in any aspect of human development.

Why it's there? Who knows. Could be an inevitable result of the way our bodies handle DNA, it could actually have a purpose that we don't know about, or it could be a practical joke being played by RNA gnomes.

Viruses, probably.

See, a virus is just a bit of RNA (similar to DNA) that float around and, if they come into contact with one, inject themselves into cells. Since cells use RNA as their...programming, the virus just replaces some of the current RNA and has the cell follow the instructions that are encoded in the virus.

This can include re-writing DNA.

Such treatments are, I believe, already in use for some disorders.

cool, now we wont have to hear people complaining about AIDs anymore, I don't know about everyone, but I'm sick of it, now if you could find a cure for cancer I'd be happy.

I think it's mostly because it's still being tested. You'd seem like an ******* to millions of people if you were the first to report on this while they're still working on it, but it turned out to not work. Getting peoples' hopes up and then shattering they're hope.

Either that or the big pharmaceutical companies are keeping this a secret so that they still make money off their own treatments. >.< I hate how humans are sometimes.

I didn't know this. Gotta say that I find it pretty interesting. I should look more into it.

There's nothing innately bad about viruses.

They are just...blueprints, or bits of computer code, that float around until they find something that can read them.

The fact that all the ones still around are harmful is simply because instructions that go: "Devote all of your energy to making copies of me and spreading them" get spread further than ones that go "If you wouldn't mind just helping me a little bit here, then you can go back to doing what you're doing. Thanks."

Eh, not really. A vaccine does, in a (very, very, very) limited way harm you, because you get injected with a form of the virus (either live or dead, depending, but in either case unable to truly infect you) that your body can then..."study" so that it can detect them faster next time.

im not taking the cancer or AIDS vaccine, because of the side effects like blindness, paralysis, etc.

unless its like an 85% chance of it not failing.
