Depression, actual depression, causes you to want death. However we don't because we don't know what lies beyond, if there's anything, if we physically can't die and will just be putting ourself through torture, or just don't want to take the easy way out.

That's probably the worst thing you could say to someone who might actually be close to killing themselves. I don't know if you know this, but most people who want to kill themselves aren't exactly alright in the head.

This doesn't follow at all.

I've wanted to kill myself in the past. Wanted to very, very badly, but been unable to. Your gut opposes it very strongly, so you have to have quite a bit of willpower (or be very depressed) to overcome that.

Nice, enlightening speech I suppose, but the defeatism is a little tiresome.

And John, your post sort of defeats the purpose of a purely subjective and thoughtful OP. By trying to force yourself to sound smart, you only succeeded in making yourself look like an idiot. Try not to take everything literally from now on.

But that's rather my point, it isn't thoughtful.

It's self-contradictory and objectively incorrect.

One is free to disagree about subjective things, but that's not what was going on here.

Plus, of course, I'm not trying to make myself look smart. I rarely try to make myself look smart, and when I do so it tends to be in the SD section.

Finally, how am I to take things, if not literally? I have no idea what subjective meaning was supposed to be there, all I know is that the statements, as written, are incorrect. If I've misunderstood the message then Eggys is free to correct me.
