What is your 'definition' of the darkness? The question has been plauging my mind for a while now, and I notice that people - including me - use a term known as 'the darkness' when descibing certain events or sitations. I myself use the darkness when describing very grim events and sitatations, such as the voices that call across midnight's gaze upon me, and those faint screams that I hear echoing through space.
One might use the darkness to describe the end of a life, or even use it to descibe a birth of a child into a cruel, cruel world. I always, as I said, assosited the darkness with the voices that call across midnight's gaze upon me, and I see them as calling from some place far off, lonely, and dark. Sometimes I hear the echo of a screaming soul, someone who is in pain out there in the world, crying, and I hear them scream, wishing I could save them. Unfortunately, I am only human - or so I think - so I can only listen to them, hear them fade so painfully gradual. Some, paticually "good" people, think of the the darkness as something evil, sick, and foul. Ones of a deeper thought might even assosiate the darkness with bliss, seeing it as the escape route for those who have seen the dark roots behind life and mankind. The truth is, there is no true answer as to whether the darkness is good or bad, but that is all down to personal opinion. I am neutral about it. What is your definition of the darkness? |

Darkness = absence of light.

(You can take it metaphorically though as well, if you think of "the light" as everything that gives you fortitude and hope, just as you're using "the darkness" as a metaphor for everything that makes you feel emotionally crippled) |

One of the things that made me write this thread was when I remembered someone that I once loved said to me, "...The darkness is beautifully chatoic the one's sanity, is it not?" I merely agreed with her, but now I often question whether the darkness is bad or good, asking peoples' opinions. But, in a sense, it is bliss. When I tell people that, they never seem to get the secret behind the words, "Darkness is bliss, nor is it the end of central fear." |

Because you weren't having light reflected into your eyeballs.

Re: Definition of the Darkness
I see darkness as something which without light cannot exist. The two are as women are to men. One cannot exist without the other. Darkness and light are two things which reflect our lives greatly. No matter how dark something will get, there is always a ray of hope, a ray of light which can always penetrate darkness. Darkness is not permanent and can ALWAYS be overrided by light, which I think applies with our lives. No matter how grim things get, something good is bound to come along.
*slight Kingdom Hearts rip and very generic interpretation of darkness*

Re: Definition of the Darkness
This isn't meant for serious discussion; religion and politics are well suited subjects for that board.
Anyway, physical darkness prevents us from seeing. As the untrusting humans we are, we fear what we can't see. It makes us feel uncomfortable, therefore, we associate "darkness" with not only the physical but also whatever makes us feel bad.

Re: Definition of the Darkness
I've always associated darkness with the unknown and feared, while light is seen and understood.

Re: Definition of the Darkness
The darkness is a period of your life when you are uncertain when you see no way out of your problems. I associate the darkness as a time when you become stronger and when you find out who you really are. For example, when I was going through a divorce a few years ago I considerd it to be the darkest chapter of my life. Durring this period of my life I had no purpose for a while, but good also comes from the darkness: strength, wisdom, certainty, etc. Everyone goes through certain trails in their life, none of these are easy to overcome and some seem almost unbearable.
