Two inches from a coffin

So exactly a week after my dad was operated on for Kidney cancer I played my first SrAAA hockey game since before xmas. At the end of the 1st period we were leading 3-0. A guy from the other team walked in, split the defence and let a slap shot go from between the circles (at least 80-90 mph at 15-20 feet away)... I didn't have time to react and the puck hit me in the neck... I lost all feeling on the right side of my body, I dropped and they called the ambulance as the swelling was compressing my carotid artery and my trachea...

I was in the hospital since last night under surveillance to make sure the swelling went down completely and that my diastolic pressure went up again (I was 98/47)

Anyways that probably was the closest I have ever been being killed in my life... Makes you question things...

Wow dude, that's crazy. Events like that really do change the way you look at life.

I know I should be really serious about this, but I really feel the need to ask you, did you see the fabled "light?"

Closest I've gotten to death was blood loss from an axe cut at the back of my neck when I was a young'un back in Europe.

WHERE WAS YOUR NECK GUARD, REMY?!

Those used to be compulsory in Canada, but I think they dropped the regulation because it was making Canada/US tournaments complicated or something because none of the US teams had them.

I was a couple inches from being hit by a fast-moving car a few weeks ago when it swerved out on the ice while I was walking on the side of the road. That got my hear pumping, boy howdy.

Not really.... It was really a weird situation... when I got hit I lost nervous control of my right side, the first thing I did when I fell down is I checked if I could still breathe. Then we determined it wasn't a C spine and I was pretty responsive. I had other issues when I tried to get up but the most dangerous moment was that night at the hospital when the Anti inflammatory they gave me didn't work and just made the swelling worst. It started to pressure my spinal cord, carotid artery and my trach. My O2 saturation went below 80% and thats when the alarm went off and they had to inject me again. I was asleep as this went on so I could have very well died there but never came close really.

It was a very weird incident... And it happens exacly a week after my dad gets operated for kidney cancer... wow

I play SrAAA hockey now, neck guards are not mandatory at that level of play. They also don't protect from impact, only laceration from skate blades and hockey sticks. I will on the other hand start wearing a dangler again (I'm a goalie yo) although again I'm not even sure that would have helped, just because of the shot dynamics.

I'm on painkillers but its not even close to the most pain I ever felt... This is on the other hand by far the most scary and life altering because on most other occasions I was knocked out on impact (Mostly encounters with fencing in DH races).

Well, probably better than smashing into a tree while skiing, right?

My uncle almost broke he neck playing hockey last year, it was like, by the millimetres that he didn't. Still plays though, once he healed up and such.

Dangerous sport!

Ouch. That looks nasty!

I guess that you would have to be thankful, but there's nothing to worry about too much if it isn't severe. A neck guard would be great 24/7, too.

YouTube - Ski Crashes! 2 ?????

That is the other sport I practice... I got at a pretty high level of competition also...

The most pain was when I crashed over a fence and in the trees and broke my two wrists, my humerus on the right side, my right tibia and fibula (open fracture), two ribs (which = collapsed lung) and a fractured C7 vertebrae.

I got knocked unconscious on the spot but the recovery was absolutely horrible.

Rem, that's insane! Good to hear that you're alright though. 15-20 feet is pretty close for a freakin slap shot, holy smokes.

Holy ****... I hope you feel better. Take care of yourself better I guess, although there wasn't much you could have done at that point anyway.

You, my good sir, are one lucky sumbiatch.

I'm glad you're not dead and that somebody had the common sense to call a medic for you. ;3

80% O2 isn't really a nice place to be. D:

You do have some hot pots.

On the bright side you blocked the goal.

I've come close to death twice in my life. One I don't remember (severe concussion), and the other was a miracle.

Re: Two inches from a coffin

Damn that sucks, glad you are alright. I always argued with friends that hockey is one of the most dangerous sports around. I will have to show a couple of them this. I know what its like being close to death.. Stabbed in ribs once while being robbed and had a gun held right up to my head working at a gas station being robbed, it does make you change your views on the world.
