Which time period?

If you had the choice, what time period would you live in? It could be any time period from and in any country in the world, but try to keep in mind the reality of the period. However, the main thing is fun. You are imagining a different life for yourself so I guess it’s no big deal if you abuse the historical accuracy of a time. ^_^

Personally, I find my choice pretty strange considering that I am most interested in world history and Asia specifically.

I would like to have lived in the American Old West at some time after the 1850s. I don’t have any illusions of being a cowboy or anything, but the idea of living in a boomtown while drinking, gambling, and hoping to strike gold is an alluring one. Although, if I had a choice, I think I would want to pursue a trade such as being a blacksmith rather than something like mining.

It would have been an exceedingly hard and, most likely, a very short life, but it has a certain romantic aspect. Also, the notion of a challenging, difficult life interlaced with hard rollicking good times is attractive to some of the more testosterone driven males I would imagine. Because of the distance, the West was difficult to control by the rules and laws of the U.S. government so a certain amount of lawlessness and its own self-imposed rules were the actuality of the period.

I guess growing up knowing some really manly men like my father and grandfather makes me wish for a harder, harsher kind of life to test myself. The Old West could have supplied that for sure.

What about everybody else? When and where would you have lived?

I guess like ancient Greece or the like. I was always fascinated with that time period in high school during classical studies. Or maybe Samoa in the 1800's, so I can see how my ancestors lived (:

Sure, there's all sorts of horrible wars, diseases, invasions... but if you were middle-class (me), male (me), not a slave (me), and educated (me), you had a pretty damn exciting life with consistent sexual relations of both sexes.

I have to agree with Liah and Kedsy. Ancient Greece would have been really cool too. Western civilization as a whole owes so much to Greece.

Rome at the height of its power would have been awesome too. I actually think I'd opt for Rome over Greece. There were so many Greek influences in Rome that you could experience some of Greece in a sense anyway.

I'd go to Ancient Egypt and live a life of awe and amazement. And would finally figure out all the secrets and where some of the hidden tombs layed. And if it were possible to return to modern times, i would surely provide proof to archaeologists of the locations of these places.

However, there are many periods in the 1900s I would like to live in, mainly any decade after the 1950s. Be a hippie in the 60s! Listen to disco in the 70s! Play punk music in the 80s etc.

Ummmmm. Well, I'm pretty good with my time.

I wouldn't change the time I'd live in. Now.

I like the 1920's in America. I'm not really sure why it appeals to me, but it does.
I also agree with Liah, Kedsy, and Star Boy with living in Ancient Greece. It would seem like lotsa fun.

I'd like to be in the knighthood, although things were much more bloody and horrendous, and daughters got married to really old men.. so, nevermind.

Probably in the early 60's. The oldies music, the general style of everything. I'd like to see it.

I'll cheat and say that I want to be immortal and go back really far. Like 3000BC or something.

But without immortality I'd stay where I am.

For a time period to live in, I'd have to say exactly where I am right now. I know just a little bit too much about places like ancient Greece or Rome to seriously want to live there...although living in an actual (although somewhat skewed) democracy for once would be interesting.
