it could be that I never played D&D and this was a random attempt.

You usually need a score of 11 or so, with all mods included, to pass most skill checks.

A natural 20 (rolling a 20 on your 20-sided-die) means you have a monster stroke of amazing luck and automagically succeed at whatever task you were trying to do.

If I remembered who this kid was or what he did, he'd probably have a pretty hard Diplomacy/Bluff check, but as it is I don't care. :3
