God, I am so sick of this wack word.

Overrated. It seems that every time that you post about something, someone comes along with the comment "Eh, its overrated."

WTF does that mean? A lot of people like it? You hate it and just don't want to say that outright? Come on, people, if your going to post something, make it worth my time. "Overrated" is just about one of the stupidest terms invented in the history of mankind. Just because something is popular doesn't mean that its bad, but it doesn't mean that its good either.

I completely agree. How analytical or original is an argument when the base is "overrated"? How are any of us able to assume something was taken in too well? If a sufficient base of people appreciated it then they appreciated it. Nothing more to it.

The term isn't meant to mean that it's popular, it's supposed to signify that it is not as good as people say it is. It can be a game that isn't as popular, but the people who like it give it too much credit for what it is. I suppose it could also refer to the game critics and what they have literally rated it as.

Personally I think it's a good term, it really means 'what's so special about it?' I use it for Final Fantasy a lot, I find it overrated and I personally don't understand why a lot of people like it so much. But everyone has different tastes overall, so I would never complain about that, they are perfectly entitled to like a game that I do not.

Hmm, I've never been too bothered when people say something is overrated to me. To me, it's just a term (as ZeldaGal4Ever has said) saying something just isn't as good as a lot of people suggest. Football, Naruto and McDonald's are three suggestions that can apply to me. Lots of people love watching football here, but I just can't see the appeal of a bunch of saps (seriously, they get a finger brushed against them and they're screaming in agony and rolling around on the floor) running around after a ball. Naruto, just neh. I tried watching it, but just didn't like it enough to keep watching. McDonald's? I don't care if it's one of the most popular food chain, I won't eat their ****ty burgers that barely qualify above rat turds, not to mention that cum/piss relish they love to stick in even when I tell them NO.

Even if a million people say something is good, chances are, that doesn't apply for some people. Something like that anyway.

Ok, less take a look at the word and see if we can derive a logical meaning based on what the word is made up of.

Overrated

Ok, we see that it was the word "over" in it; overrated. Over being, more than needed, or an abundance of sorts in this usage.

Next, we can see the word "rated"; overrated. Of course, if you rate something, then you are marking it as being good or bad.

So let's throw the two meanings together now. When something is overrated, it simply means that people give so much hype or praise for something, but then it comes to find out it might just be subpar to what was thought. Basically, it has been overrated, or given an extremely higher standard than what it really should have been given.

In my experience, "it's overrated" roughly translates as "everyone else likes it and I refuse to follow the crowd, so I'm going to hate it with all gusto". I admit I'm the same when it comes to Final Fantasy 7.

And yes, it is a terrible word.

I think there are two general usages of the word. One applies to something that you have experienced, and were disapointed by based on what you had heard about it/expected from it. The other is used by silly psuedo-non-conformists who refuse to like something because it is liked by others (ie what Pandy said). One is reasonable, the other not so much.

And yeah, the word isn't such a big deal, but it is overused a fair bit, I can see why someone would get cranky.

I think besides the fact that the word is machine gunned at you these days, it is more that the word is used wrong.

Bad example:
OoT (There we go!) is overrated!
This is actually more opinion. You might have found a better game, there are still countless of screaming fans who think it's the closest to heaven they'll ever get.
So what you should say is:
There are blind idiots out there who can't see passed there first premature ejaculation.
Remember that person you had a crush on as a kid, your first 'love'? Remember how you (probably) totally forgot about them after you got in to high school and had a gazillion more crushes? Is your first love overrated? No it's nostalgia, you have good memories and then move on. The fact that people still dwell in the past and as such miss the great opportunities that come by is their fault. It's not the thing that is overrated it's the person who has their eye caps on.

Good example:
Age of Conan is (was) overrated!
At the beginning it got great reviews. Then it was found out that if you play the game for longer than 5 minutes, the number of quests and things to do went down faster than Enron.

Atleast that's my overrated opinion.

Though, I guess people do use it without knowing what it means...

For example, Halo, to me... It totally overrated. Alas, I am a fan of the series >_>
