Why I won't have an 8th Grade formal.

When my school's SGA brought up an 8th grade formal, it was turned down by my principal for this reason.

It wouldn't be fair to the 6th graders.

Ok, hold up. What? We don't get a formal because its 'unfair' to the sixth graders? Well what about the seventh graders? Is it unfair to them too? But wait, wouldn't they get one when they're 8th graders? Isnt that why its called an 8th grade formal?

What the hell does this have to do with North Carolina?

Back in my high school you get prom for 11th and 12th but not 9th and 10th. You could go if you dated someone in that grade and you weren't but other then that you had to wait until 11th or 12th. This could work the same way.

8th, as in Junior High? No... honestly you guys are all too young. You can't even drive to pick up your dates, what is the point?

I can understand dances, but not formal ones.

Uh. What? I can kind of see what your principal was getting at. It could be seen as "unfair" to the sixth graders because they don't get a formal when they transition into seventh grade, and the transition between sixth and seventh grade is often seen as a transition to middle school. However, the transition into middle school is much less significant than the transition to high school. And besides, like you said, they would get a formal when *they* get to eighth grade.

Sounds like somebody's lazy and just doesn't want to deal with it, or something, because that really isn't a valid explanation.

Well, I had an eighth grade formal, and I think it was a good experience. It was nice to be able to celebrate finally moving on to high school, especially since I went to the same school from kindergarten to eighth grade. I doubt the "formal" being mentioned would be expected to be anything like prom- just a little fancier and more formal (hence the name) than normal dances for, say, halloween, or something. At my old school we had some dances that were just dances, some that were semi-formal, and one or two that were formal- the descriptors were really only there to let you know the kind of attire that was expected.

And as for the inquiry as to what the point is if they can't even pick up their dates- they don't necessarily need dates in order to go to a formal :/. The point is to get all dressed up and dance and have fun with your classmates! At least in my opinion, dates aren't the entire "point" of dances, or at least they certainly don't have to be.

Thats where I live.

Yeah, maybe you guys are right, but when all the other schools are having a formal dance for the 8th grade and we aren't, with that lame excuse, that makes us a bit pissed.

As for the dance, that sucks. Although they're a much bigger deal in high school anyway--or at least in theory. My high school prom sucked for me personally. I had much more fun at college dances.

Why would you want one?

I never did understand the whole attraction to these things. We had our prom a couple weeks back and I couldn't undertand the hype about it. I think I might go when I am a senior, but right now it just seemed dumb. I would also like to know whose bright idea was the PotC themed after prom party that was held in the gym. Hell our class picked a terrible theme for prom... 'Lights, Camera, Action!' in otherwords, Hollywood. Why does Prom even need a theme?

School dances are just terrible. I rather waste my time watching TV.

Why do you have 8th Grade Formals? Maybe the concept of a formal here is different, but we only had one in Grade 12 to coincide with graduation. There was a semi-formal in Grade 11, though. Grade 8 is a bit early.

To stroke their egos even more in making them think they are somehow better because they get a "formal" and to mark some inexistent transition between 8th and 9th grade, when there is little difference.

I swear, 8th graders were sometimes treated better than the seniors when I was in high school.

We have a formal winter dance. Supposed to dress up in formal wear, and because I have no formal clothing I dont go.

Your principal is a complete idiot. Now unless I am mistaken, those 6th and 7th graders will one day become 8th graders. Who would then beable to attend this 8th grade formal dance thing.

Do you get one in 9th? If you get one in 9th this is no big deal, whats another year.
