60 - Earth Hour

On March 29th, at 8 PM till 9 PM the world will come together to fight against climate change.

Are you gonna join in?

I'm gonna do it. An hour without power. I'm sure it won't be that bad.

:]

Re: 60 - Earth Hour

I wont be joining. The issue isn't the "amount of power" we use, but rather the methods we are getting the power in terms of pollution. See, my whole town is powered off a damn, with a coal backup generator that hasn't been touched in 8 years. So, if they were using coal at that time... sure. But there not, so protesting what exactly? There not going to change anything, and you wont conserve enough of anything to make a difference with the earth. It takes a collective 1,000+ year of consistent effort to make any difference on the earth itself, and it's not happening.

Humans are like we've always been. We use everything up, then find a way to replace it with something else.

EDIT: FYI, it's now called "Climate Change", and not Global Warming, because it has been proven as a natural occurance over the lifespan of the earth. In otherwords, it's going to happen with or without humans doing anything.

That's retarted. I go outside and BAM; the climate is changing from cold to hot to snow to rain to hail to bird crap.... At least with a name as Global Warming a person wouldn't have to ask what it is. Unlike a name 'Climate Change', it's pretty obvious.

Says the man who made up a word. Anyways, I am not here to debate about Climate Change and why it changed from Global Warming, you can do a google search and find all you need. I just wont be participating because it wont make any difference to the earth's wellbeing.

I think I am going to do it. But, Brokenjoker, you are from canada, and sweden has a different time zone, so I will have to check what the time will be here. "An hour without power" will not be so hard, if the time in sweden then are for example 04:00 at morning

It will be interesting to see how much energy the world can "save" from this hour. I'll join in.
Oh, jokerman, clever. Never thought of that, really.

Lol, an hour without any power won't change the climate.

Exactly. I'm just joining because I think it's interesting. I really don't get how it "fights against climate change". I mean, sure, people would be able to resist the luxury of energy for an hour, but not enough to actually give it a satisfactory result.

That's funny, I always called them seasons and fronts.
Also synoptic scale and mesoscale weather, if you want to be more technical.

Anyway, this is a rather pointless gesture. Whatever amount of pollution this movement avoids by not using any power for sixty minutes will be negligible compared to the pollution China and other "industrialized" nations will put out in a fraction of that time.

What they should be doing is attacking our outsource and import-centric consumer culture, which gets to run right around all the labor and environmental standards we've set for our own nations.

I'm aware that regardless of what we do, the world is going down, but I liked the thought behind it.

I spend my whole life conserving energy, so no :0P Most of my electrical energy use is automatic, anyway (water usage from the well, for instance).
