Emos???

Is anyone here a emo if so how do you do your hair and what music do you listen to. Also is it true that emos are bi sexuals and slit there body??

Hm, people call me emo, but emo is just a stereotype dude. Typically, emos dye there hair black, cut themselves, and all that other crap. Emo does stand for emotional, which only means your human. If you want to take a humorous look at it, go to youtube and type in "The Emo Song"

Emo stands for emotional. It makes me mad when people cry about nothing and act as if their rich suburban life is so bad and walk around carrying themselves so depressinlgy...oh let's not forget the "I'M DIFFERENT!" But they all look the same. Real people that have an excuse to act like that you don't see in a rich private school. Sorry to say. And why does it matter?

"Emo" (or what certain people refer to as emo even though emo is a style of music and not a subculture, just beating Todd to it before he can start) is a really really watery version of other sub-cultures, a sort of over-the-counter counter-culture (also, I wish someone would tell me where I stole that phrase from so I could reference it, because I've forgotten). It's like punk but for wimpy 14 year old boys who want to look disillusioned because it's hip these days. It's the worst kind of psuedo-non-conformity. It makes me giggle more than anything.

Emo's, chavs, goths, grungers, skaters, metal heads, jocks, poofs, grease monkeys, nerds, jerks, hilton's, gamers, fatties, uggo's, scenes...

It all boils down to one thing...

We all come out the same in the end.

Seriously, if you are an emo in your teenage years, chances are you won't be come 25, so it really does not matter

Emo is not a group of people, it is a genre of music. A person cannot be emo any more than they can be orchestral, classical rock or power metal.

I try to wear black as often I can, my face is very pale and has a generally sour expression, and I'm quite negative and asocial. Somehow, some people think that's emo. I don't get how they can link those things to each other. They are surprised to hear that I prefer ABBA over My Chemical Romance (if that's an emo band).

I have very little knowledge about the emo culture. Mostly because people all the time disagree about what it really is about. Let's say, someone says x is emo, and then an emo person comes and says that no x isn't emo, and then someone else comes and says that the emo person isn't a real emo. This goes on forever. Very confusing.

^ I see your point. The whole subculture (or flimsy excuse for one) is rather ill-defined. The archtypal emo in my head is pierced, short and choppy haired, armband-wearing, and vaguely punkish. I always thought this was the generally accepted emo 'look', but people still insist on calling me emo. If anything, I look a little gothy at times, with the long black hair and the big flouncy skirts etc. Don't get me started on how much that pisses me off.

The subculture of being 'emo' today has nothing to do with the musical genre called 'emo,' because there are essentially no emo bands left. There are bands with emo influences, or bands that were emo but evolved out if it, but most of what is called emo today is just alternative rock and/or post-hardcore.

There used to be a emo subculture associated with the music, as there has been for many musical genres. The hippy movement associated itself with psychedelic rock, Generation X was associated with grunge, and so on. The subculture that gets classified as emo now is associated with a certain type of music, but not the emo music that originally existed. Sort of the same way that modern-day hippy types are associated more with jam bands like Phish or Dave Matthews to a certain extent.

As for the two original questions, no people who identify themselves as emo are not always bisexual, though I think there is a certain amount of sexual androgeny to the more extreme members of the culture these days, and I'm sure some experiment with the same sex, but that's not something exclusive to that culture. Also, not all people who consider themselves emo cut, and often people who are not emo at all cut. Cutting is something that isn't done because of a culture, but usually due to some sort of psychological compulsion.

Pfft. Emos. I've been called an emo cos of the music I listen to. Sue me if I like Gothic rock, punk rock and some metal! It does NOT make me emo! Why is it that people are grouped into catergories due to the type of music you listen to? It makes no sense. *Scratches head* I mean, if you listen to Hip-Hop or R&B, you'll be classed as a "chav" in my school without a second thought, even though that may not be further from the truth. Confusing.

I mean okay, if you wear all black, dye your hair black, wear all black makeup, harm yourselves and so on, then yeah, people may be classed as "Emo" but NOT just because of their taste in music. *Moan grumble*
