Texting In Class

What do you people think about texting in class? Are you against it?

I honestly don't care about texting in class. I send and receive at least 200 texts a day in school. I don't cheat, and my phone never goes off and interrupts the teacher. As long as that doesn't happen, what's the big deal with texting in class?

Re: Texting In Class

I don't care either... But it is funny to point it out to the teacher when the person texting is an enemy...

Also it's hilarious when you see the kids who obviously don't know about the "Vibrate" setting, and their phone rings in the middle of a test...

I find it amusing that the teacher assumes that you're talking about school--because it's oh so important to you.

Re: Texting In Class

I went to a private schools and they had strict rules about cell phones in class.
If we brought a cell phone to school they had to stay in our lockers from 8 to 4 (even though school was from 9-3), and we weren't allowed to use them even during lunch.

When I heard some of my friends from public school say they texted during class and listened to their mp3's I was shocked.

Truthfully, I understand why we were never allowed them, and as a teacher I think it would be so frustrating to have classes upon classes of students who pay more attention to their cell phones.

Re: Texting In Class

I text in class sometimes. But the only person I can talk to that way is my mom because I don't think it matters as much if she does it at work. All my other friend don't text in class, so I can't talk to them. I haven't been caught yet, but I know if I was some teachers would be pretty angry.

My phone only went off once in class because I forgot to put vibrate on that morning. Its was embarrassing.

Re: Texting In Class

I never text in class because I find text messages to be annoying. What's awful is when someone you don't know dials a wrong number when texting and you wind up getting a bunch of texts from random losers you don't know. I get "WHAT U DOIN 2NITE SEXY" way too often from some fellow whose area code is in, like, Michigan.

Re: Texting In Class

Texting in class is stupid. Can't it wait until after classes? You should really be paying attention to the teacher, not to little high school dramas.

Also, 200 texts a day is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.

I find the people in my classes more interesting people to talk to than words on a screen.

I've heard stranger than 200 texts a day. At my friends school they have contests to see you who can text the most in one minute.

Heheh, that happened to me once. It was a Mario song too... the "Starman" theme.

Helen Keller was deaf AND blind. So that didn't make any sense.

Edit: Unless your text messages operate by braille, which would be totally awesome.

Re: Texting In Class

In my school, cell phones are banned in classrooms; when you bring one to school, you have to take it to the office and get them to put it in the school safe. Its the same with iPods, MP3, cameras, hand-held game systems, and just about anything else electronic and portable. There was even a stage where Yu Gi Oh cards were banned (that was just ridiculous, since the teachers didn't enforce it anyway). If a teacher sees any of the above, they will be confiscated until the end of the day. Second offence, it goes to the office safe overnight, and third, it stays with the principal until your parent comes for it. And they're allowed to do it too, since a condition of enrollment is that phones aren't allowed.

Its so we don't get distracted. It actually makes sense in my school though, since there are lots of kids here with behavioural problems and learning difficulties.

I find that impossible to believe (=P).

Back in the day, a lot of the students around me used to text all the time (women, mostly). Most of the time, it didn't really phase me. It was only when the student was caught and he/she would fight for their life all just to not give up their phone to the teacher. Of course, most of time, it was concealed using the traditional art of utilizing backpack pockets.

I generally wouldn't advocate it; but I wouldn't mention it to you either. Personally, I've never texted during class. I find it foolish. I can hold out on communicating with someone for an hour, and my friends eventually learned to accept that.

*Shrugs* Depends what class I'm in. If I find myself really bored, and I get text message then of course I am going to reply to it. Not like I pay attention in class anyway.

Re: Texting In Class

I personally wouldn't text during class. I'm there to learn, not lead a social life. But, at the same time, I'm not going to rat anybody out. If he or she wants to miss out on important information and risk dropping class grades, that's his/her fault.

However, I'm 120% against texting while driving.

Re: Texting In Class

I see kids texting in class all the time. I see more kids parusing Facebook or on msn or whatever during class. But the part of university is that if you aren't disturbing the professor or the people around you, you can pretty much do whatever you want, because you're only screwing yourself over. You miss an important point in the lecture because you were texting? You lose those marks on the midterm or the final.

As long as it doesn't disturb me, it doesn't matter. People can do what they want with their time, and reap whatever benefits or problems that come with it.

Re: Texting In Class

In my high-school (before I ran off to job-corps and now to the navy) you had to place your cell on the teachers desk as with your Ipods and CD players. And If your cell did go off. You were in deep unless it was a parent or guardian. It is always funny when people do use the vibrate setting...

Vibrating is still pretty loud, so the teacher can hear it.
