Just because yOu are fully aware and immersed in the online culture doesn't mean that everyone else is. A lot of people (especially parents) are seriously confused and want to know what this stuff is about.
I don't see why that would be laughable =)

I was reading through them, got up to the end of the letter d, and found about 40 which I hear in regular conversation, some of which are actual words, not slang.

But some like "dycotfc" (as the first thing I thought of) I've never seen anywhere on the internet.

I say "lol", "roffle", "newfag", "teh", "leet", "pwn", "lamer" and a variety of online gaming and programming related "leet" phrases "IRL", mostly among my programmer friends.


Also, if there was no slang, we'd all be speaking Proto Indo-European.

Epic Roffle Waffle, =) Well I use "l33t sp34k" like ZOMG PWN3D when ever I play Counter Strike or WoW even in real life, like if someone falls down I'll scream "OWNED!!!" =/.

Me and my brothers speak it sometimes to mess with our parents, as they don't understand it. Or I might say a term or two just for fun.

it's not just for 1337. it's for any slang. and suppose a parent sees an email or im conversation printed out and wants to know. the kid doesn't have to be SPEAKING 1337 neccesarily.

I frequently use phrases such as lol, rofl, pwn, w00t, over 9000 etc. when I'm among friends. Luckily, my friends are also nerds, so they don't think I'm strange for it.
