Kids these days...

I was playing the drums in church today, when one of the younger kids (about 7 or 8 years old) came up to me and asked me what I knew what masturbating was. I thought he had just heard it somewhere like on T.V. But I said yeah. Then the shocking thing was that he proceeded to show me how men did it while using his finger. He also said that "It's when a man practices sex on himself." I was like "how do you know that?" And he just kinda walked away.

Major points:
This kid was 7-9 years old, and it was in church. HOLY crap.

Re: Kids these days...

My little brother learned what that was when he was 8.
And in school, even. He jokes around about it all the time.

Everything is too out in the open nowadays.

He knows what homosexuality is, too.
When I was that young, if someone used the term 'gay', I wouldn't have known what they were talking about. :3

Re: Kids these days...

I didn't know about that stuff till I learned about puberty in 5th grade. Now, when my sister went on a school trip, guys were peeping in her bunk! She's 11. Kids today are swearing like sailors. And at my school, this girl who's like 11-12 dressed up as a hooker for Halloween(I don't know if that was what the costume was supposed to be, but that's what it looked like).

It's sad what society is coming too.

'Tis better than the 1800s when elbows were considered to sexy to be viewed by people. I suppose that I come from that generation though, I for one think it is not a bad thing. I would rather children know this stuff now instead of finding out much later. It is also a good way of seperating the "immature" from the more "mature" of the children.

Kids are fascinated by that kind of stuff. It just seems weird because he's so little. So what if it's in church? Should people just stop being human when they walk in the door? Kids don't care. They barely pay attention in church, and chew gum from their mothers to stay busy.

Re: Kids these days...

By the time a child is ten, I think a child should know what masturbation is, and what is homosexuality. I been known about homosexuality, before 9. But when I learned about masturbation, however....eh, let's say I was older than 10. Ehehe....

Re: Kids these days...

I guess people need to be a bit more open towards sexuality... Honestly there is a time and a place and church isn't quite it... but still I mean with what I see on TV these days I'm not quite shocked by that statement.

Bring on the nudists I say.

Re: Kids these days...

My parents are quasi-beatniks, they withheld no information from me, and when things like Wikipedia hit the internet in the late 90s, all the information I wanted was at my disposal. I was masturbating before I hit puberty, and I'm a better person for it.

A fool in the making. I see kids like that all the time. It's quite saddening.

The fundamental flaw with this last statement is that you're assuming nudists do what they do (i.e. live without clothing) for sexual reasons. By and large, that is not the case. Generally, decisions to go nude, enter nudist colonies, or what have you, tend to do with societal norms that these people find unnecessary or are trying to throw off. There's a kind of encumbrence or discomfort with clothes in general that also leads many to do away with clothing of any kind. Others just like the freedom they feel from lack of clothes, giving them inner peace, etc. I think it's a very rare case for someone to become nudist to get any sort of sexual gratification from it. In fact, I'd say that most nudists would find those who do get off on being nude as a sexual desire as a kind of cheapening of their lifestyle. (Just like very few barefooters have foot fetishes, for another example.)

If this makes any sense.

Re: Kids these days...

Hopefully my kids will steer clear of this kind of thing. I didn't know what it was until I was in high school and some sick minded girl in my class told me about it against my will.

Re: Kids these days...

Meh

Ever since I saw "children of the corn" I just assume kids know everything about everything.

Last summer I was a counselor at a summer camp, kids are normal.

Back in 4th grade we'd joke about how we want to sex up britney spears

Re: Kids these days...

I think knowledge of homosexuality should be taught at a young age. Popular culture seems to portray homosexuals in a negative way, children should be taught this isn't the case.

Re: Kids these days...

I never said there weren't exceptions. And I agree, Ugly Betty is an amazing show (I just bought the first season). But there are still many negative messages in society, gay is still an extremely common adjective to use for something dumb.

"That movie was so gay"

Not to mention the use of the f-word.
