Fight Against MTV's Slander - Music Video Shows Bush As Hitler

I am absolutely disgusted with a music video I recently saw on MTV that shows our president as Hitler. Bush is standing on a podium in front of a huge crowd as he delivers a speech in the same eratic manner as Hitler himself. The "band" who created this garbage is called Ohgr and the song is called Majik. I'm sick and tired of these liberals bashing our president and I am going to do something about it. If anyone wants to tell MTV how you feel I have created a petition and know the phone numbers and addresses of MTV. Please tell MTV how you feel by doing one or all of the following:

My my my, have we ever heard of a certain Constitutional Right called "Free Speech?" I know that comparing Bush to Hitler was a bit over the top, but that doesn't mean we should silence all dissenting opinions against him.

Here you're making an a** out of yourself by accusing the left wing of being defammatory while at the same time using the word 'liberal' as a defammatory term. Funny how so many of the comments on that list of signers seem to go against the petition. I doubt that will help matters, any.

People are just jokers, little immature kids who make all the little Saddam/Bin Ladin/George W Bush flash videos and jokes, they're just foolish. Back in the old days, presidents were loved, but shot in the end...

Ok that was a competition on some site, and it was a free post. They were having the best political commercials for democrats contest. And that happened to get on there, and it was all on the news, then it got takken off. Adam Sandler just used the commercial for the video since it was funny I guess.

im starting to get tired of the bush-bashing myself. for example, people turn the "pretzel incident" into a huge national event to embarrass bush! (it was no big deal, everybody chokes on food sooner or later) or make some other stupid remark about him. yet those same people said nothing about all the iraqi's dancing in the street and praising our brave soilders over there when they were freed.

I mean im not Bushes biggest fan but comparing him to hitler is WRONG. The only person today that should be even remotely looked at as similar to him is Saddam and Bush stopped him, so shouldn't he be the opposite of a "Hitler"?

Though personally I think using the holocaust as a prop for lazy thinking and uncreative point-making is offensive, I can concede the band in question is trying to make a point, if going over-the-top. But rather than start a petition to limit freedom of speech, be more pro-active - circulate your own 'pro-Bush' media, create a website where people can discuss the good points of the president. Fight fire with fire. That way, instead of just pointing to something that offends you and saying "Ew, this makes me uncomfortable so I don't want anyone to be able to look at it, especially not the sort of people who would agree with it, because they're not the Right Sort of People, and we don't want to give them any more room to think they are," you can offer an equal and opposite viewpoint, garner the support of like-minded people, and, most importantly, prove through example rather than complaints that your position is legitimate.

My, my, my, havent you ever heard of defamation? Its illegal, you know. Whether it is in the form of libel or slander. "Free Speech" gives you the right to voice your opinion. It does not give you the right to use obscenities, "fighting words" or defamatory statements. Learn the law before you smugly proclaim it.

Not just is this a disgusting way to belittle the atrocities commited by Hitler- and those who suffered at them, it is a horrible and tactless way to attack someone.

But if politicians want to do this- its their grave. Sane people will not support it.

I'm not an expert on the libel or slander laws, but I seriously doubt that they extend into this kind of situation. I know from a journalism class that libel consistes of written defammatory statements in publications and verbal defammotory statements. I doubt that this applies to a certain flash of picture sequences in some obscure music video. But if it were a full blown commercial on TV, it would apply. I seriously doubt that this commercial actually made it to TV.

Besides, this wasn't the issue in the first place. The issue was Viggo's little snit about it. I still think that this thread has a big red "Lock Me" sign on it.

You'd do well to take your own advice, Bob - libel and slander are not absolute clauses (eg. saying or writing something bad about someone is de facto wrong). Parody is one way to get around it - persons of a certain distinction, ie. easily recognizable public figures such as, say, a president, are (in some way) unable to cry slander - because comparing a president who started what some call an 'unjust war' to Hitler falls neatly into satire and social commentary. Libel and slander only apply to statements spoken or made in print that directly defame the character of a person or in some way jeopardize their intergrity. Because Bush is such a prominent and recognizable public figure, he is 'above' such statements, and you'd be hard pressed to convince any judge that something like a video or an editorial cartoon truly compromises Bush, who, being a public figure, is not outside criticism in a free media.

Likening Bush to Hitler is an opinion.

But the other defense against a claim of slander is truth.

I fully understand the satire and parody parts of it. I know very well that the chance of a case against public official being tried- let alone convicted- for defamation is near zero. Is it not damaging? What about to teens who only get their news from channels from MTV? I know, shame on them for being closed to actual news, but it is an easy way to sway one's opinion, especially with the cultural powerhouse MTV has become.

My mini-rant was more aimed at the idea of "free-speech", as it relates to the idea of saying anything you want, any way you want, any where you want- which is not what is guaranteed at all.

why is patriotism always thrown into this? if you support the leader, you're a good american and true patriot, if you don't, you're an evil liberal and a traitor to america.

I don't get it, people should seperate politics from patriotism.

Most people around the world have an unfavourable view of bush and most likely would agree with that video. But consider that these people don't have american pride since they're not american, and they can see the image clearly and with no bias since they don't have capitalistic propraganda garbage shoved down their throats all time.

If more americans could seperate patriotism from politics, i'm quite sure bush's support would decline.

i do have a difficult understanding this logic, shouldn't leaders earn our support first?

Anyways, i'm assuming by your severe anti liberal statements, you're probably a consertative, you probably believe in the "american dream" too, believe without question that bush is right at all times and are completely satisfied with what little progress or any failure bush makes and will always find a way to justify his failures. do you get mad at people when they make any criticisms towards america or bush, no matter how small? do you believe that all poor people are lazy bums and are poor because they don't try hard enough?

sorry if i'm incorrect or generalizing, i've just noticed these common traits when participating in discussions with conservatives.
