St. Urho's Day!




The legend says St. Urho chased the grasshoppers out of the Vineyards of ancient Finland, thus saving the grape crop and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers.
He did this by uttering the phrase: "Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen"
(roughly translated: "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!").
His feast is celebrated by wearing the colors Royal Purple and Nile Green.
St. Urho is nearly always represented with grapes and grasshoppers.

My Grandmother is always knowing when this Holiday is and so do I.
The Holiday was originated in Minnesota during the rather large Migration of Finnish people in Minnesota.
Some of the Irish people say some guy made it up because we got tired of the Irish Bragging about it.
And some say it's true and a fun myth to go around my country.

I just say they're both days with an excuse to drink.

So Happy St. Urho's Day everyone. ^^

I bet if Patrick and Urho got in a fight, Patrick would easily kick Urho's ass.

Even though Irish whiskey isn't nearly as good as American whiskey, I still have to side with the drunk. The Finnish aren't called the "Fightin' Finns" for a reason.

Legend also has it that 16th March is Red Nose Day! For those of you who aren't British/English/Welsh/Scottish it's where everybody buys a fluffy red nose, badge or other novely to fund Third World children.

St. Urho sounds fun, but I must side with the Irish (duh!) on this one.

Okay, I have never heard of St. Urho's Day, so I also have to go with St. Patty's Day.

I like green, I like four leaf clovers, and leprechauns are funny. W00t for St. Patty's Day!

Btw, I actually found a four leaf clover once. I can't remember what good luck I got from it, though. Or whether I got any good luck at all for that matter.

I find that pretty unbelievable, considering we're not even part of Scandinavia.


Anyway... I'm Finnish and I haven't even heard of this legend. And Wikipedia says it was invented by some Finnish-American called Richard Mattson. So it's a lot like St. Patrick's Day: Gives Americans a great excuse to get drunk.

My parents have never heard that either.

I haven't worn green today.
