Doing anything nice for the holidays?

By "nice", I mean helping the less fortunate.
At our high school, we have a program called "Quarters and Cans". We donate money and bring in canned foods.
So far, my humanities class (~100 people) has raised over $1000, and brought in over 1000 cans of food. The other class, second period, also has over $1000, but only 500 or so cans. And that's not even the rest of the school, or the Seminary! These next 2 days, Thursday and Friday, will be the big push. The teachers won't tell us our totals, so we don't know how much we or the other class has, and therefore will give us a better incentive to donate. The class with the most money/cans gets to choose what they will transport to the office. I think we'll win, so we get to take the money down and let second period haul 2000+ cans all the way to the front of the school.

But although I like the spirit of competition, I love to think of all the families that will have presents for their kids and a nice meal this year. The school usually chooses families that have children with special needs and lots of doctor bills.

Any of you doing anything nice for the less fortunate?

Re: Doing anything nice for the holidays?

Well, our school is doing a toy-and-money drive. It's basically another event that we have where the four teams our school is split up into competes for some extra points that is supposed to help us win this gigantic event at the end of the year. Yeah, the Paw (the team I'm on) Team is obviously in first place by like... 100 points.

Re: Doing anything nice for the holidays?

Yes! It always accents our holidays.

Our school does a food drive, which is very popular. I haven't donated anything this year (sadly), but usually I do. We also participate in the giving trees, where you buy Christmas gifts for a poor child (usually an orphan or foster child). We do several, from Church, from work, etc. We always donate money to charities that help the poor, especially during Christmas.

At the beginning of winter, if something doesn't fit (which we haven't worn in about a year...since last winter) we donate it to Salvation Army.

Helping others is not as hard as some think and is extremely rewarding. Thanks for the great thread.
