Theory

Ive been thinking about this since about Monday night.

what if the universe is round. The first step was to believe that the earth is round and now the next step is to believe the universe itself is also round. Nothing can go on forever and that is how I reached my conclusion that the universe is round. When you fly a certain distance “up” you will hit a ‘wall’ for lack of a better word. Perhaps the universe does go on forever... it must be expanding in a spherical shape- i base that idea on this: everything simple in nature is round or spherical ie, planets, stars, cells, atoms*

So that is my theory. Does anyone agree/ disagree with it?

*it is round- the electrons float around it in circular fashion anyway

Re: Theory

What you mean is that lets say there is a Spacehip that flies a relatively Super Fast Speed and goes around the universe but comes back to th eplace where is starts?

Re: Theory

yes, if it was on the outer ring of the universe. on the inner ring it would fly out until it reached the outer ring at which point it would be forced to curve. be it by a wall- or some other force- or i could be completely wrong about that and the universe could go on forever, but constantly expanding spherically

Re: Theory

Wes, it's an interesting idea, and I partially agree. Listen to my little theory...

In a sense, it would be round, because it is ever expanding in all directions. It's some what mind boggling, it must be ever expanding, because how could it end, also, how could it be already infinant? Did that make sense, the way I wrote it?

rave:Sora:, are "Spacehip" and "Super Fast Speed" proper nouns?

Re: Theory

... wow, i'm loving all the aristotle here...

things are round because it's their natural shape and things fall because they natually belong on the ground...

right now, though, i actually do believe the universe is round... going with the big bang theory, if everything accelerates out at the same speed (speed of light or greater), and begins to slow down and decelerate at the same speed as gravity from everything else pulls it back, then yeah... the universe should be pretty much a perfect circle...

now the question is whether it's a perfect infinitely-expanding one or a perfect contracting one...

Re: Theory

Well, It some what is. I was reading this book about the universe and it says it is not completely round but somewhat spherical, given the noise received from outer space that let the scientist know how the universe was about (i don't remember the exact quantity) A LOT of years ago.

It also says that the Universe is in expansion (it's radious it's growing at an inverse exponential rate) and that he would be doing it until the energy of it could contain it (? - because the energy in the universe is constant and it would be so cold by then) so, when that happens it stops growing and starts involutionating (sp?).

Oh and it says that we live in a world that's contains 11 dimensions!!! wow!

*goes to find the book*

I'll post more later...

Re: Theory

I believe that there is somewhere in the Big Bang theory that says that the universe is infinate, but is always expanding in a spherical fashion....something like that. Which hurts my head.

I think that in a sence the universe is infinate, just that maybe there is a certian general area where all the mass and energy has not spread to, and thus is just a endless expance with nothing in it. So I sort of agree with you...but still believe that it is infinate.

Edit: Meh. Somewhat what Zeus said. 11 dimensions? That cool. But I think the human brain is only smart enough to comprehend 3. Well, its our stupidity...

oh zeus, i read that we have 11 dimensions in a discover magazine just the other day. it also said if you were a string, you'd see in 5 dimensions- WEIRD...

I agree, it must be expanding but there is a lot of space with nothing. This being mostly because there is only a limited amount of matter in the universe that is constantly being recycled.

Re: Theory

Due to the sheer spacial mass of the singularity, from which the universe itself has hypothetically expanded, it is difficult to establish the with any confidence a universal expansion function.

All observation from our current position in the universe is subject to red-shift, that is, because of the expansion pattern of the universe, from our perspective the universe is expanding from whatever given point in space we happen to observe it from. As such, it is theoretically impossible to truly judge our position within the universe, or in doing so, establish its actual rate of expansion. From our perspective, it appears circular, and we have no capacity for actually judging the "edge" of this expansion.

So "meh."

Re: Theory

Exactely ^^^

For example say if the unverse is spherical and we are situated near one of the edges. Then if we sent out our noise thingys and it came back it would of course *bounce back* off of one side faster than the other thus causing us to belive that the unverse is ovalated O_o

I shouldn't bother trying to sound smart should I .

Re: Theory

This my type of thread. I love discussions like this. BUT, noone here can prove that the universe is circular although it might be when you think of the natural shapes of the objects in the universe. Everything is mostly round. And then there is this thing about acceleration. Planets spin around their own axis and so do many other objects.. But this type of talking can even make your head spin around..

You know you actually convinced me. You may or may not be right but who cares. You would put up a good arguement.

Re: Theory

Since the Universe is so unimaginably vast and inconceivable, you can argue anything you please. It's pretty much impossible for us to ascertain what the Universe's "shape" is (if it even has a shape), so even if you had said it's a trapezoid, it would have been just the same to me.

I lack the understanding of Quantum thought

I believeThe universe is like one big sphere. I wonder if the universe rotates . Like the earth rotes around its axles: giving us night and day.

Re: Theory

The most logical shape for the universe would be spherical. I remember learning that atoms and sub atomic particles are spherical in shape because it's the most stable form they can achieve. Plus, as was said before, if it is expanding at all sides equally it cant be any other shape besides a sphere.
