Re: Anyone of you guys know about Trinidad Carnival? It's a festival lasting atleast 7 days, but there are many parts and 2 main days, a Monday and Tuesday. The Sunday night before, a great display show is put on, people elect the King and Queen of Carnival, the display show is called Dimache
Gras (French), in which certain people put on these giant costumes and parade along a stage one by one, and the judges select the most beautiful costumes in a male and female category. Depending on their maker, the costumes can have some pyrotechnics in them. Their is also a singing competition on the same night called the Calypso Monarch, (Calypso being a type of music and songs that was created in Trinidad). On Monday and Tuesday people parade along that same stage wearing their costumes and dancing to traditional Soca, (which is a more modern version of Calypso).
The people belong to different groups called bands, each band has their own King and Queen that made their appearance on Sunday night. The people wear costumes that is just a smaller version of their band's King and Queen.
It is the festivals splendor and colour that attract so many people from all over the world. On the Wednesday after, called Ash Wednesday, people head out to "cool down" at the beaches. It's a very wild and wonderful thing, something to blow off the stress of daily life. |
