Favorite Board Game
What is your favorite board game and why?
My favorite board game would be Monopoly. I love to go around the board in my metal car buying land whenever I feel like it. The chance cards are a blast to get because you never know whether you will get some money, lose some, or even get sent to jail. Another thing is being able to wave around all that money without a care in the world. You can buy everything you see, or just aim for certain property. Monopoly has tons of versions, from Star Wars to the MLB. The fact that a kid can take charge and buy what he wants to buy. Sell what he wants to sell. The power is bliss. Monopoly is a very widely known game. A lot of kids can remember a time when they played it with their family or friends. Remember to keep your answers detailed. I don't want to see any posts that just tell what your favorite board game is, you have to tell why too. |

Re: Favorite Board Game
Hey Comrade.
I used to really love Risk, but I'm starting to phase it out. If me and my friends start up a game of Risk, it usually hijacks the evening and we can't do anything else. Also, it usually turns into a big political mess, as no one ever wants to do the dirty work themselves. Sometimes that game is just fun to make a suicide run and tear through an opponent's army, just because you're tired of playing. My favorite board game is probably Clue. Fairly simple game, but fun. It's fun to tease people who make dangerous assumptions about the cards... Monopoly is good too, but takes a long time. I usually have to cap the game at 1 hour or so. And besides, how can an iron be a landowner? Inconceivable.

Re: Favorite Board Game
I just got into Sudoku, a really cool game.
Turns out they make a board gane of it. Basically you just play sudoku head to head and whoever finishes first wins. It's good for the brain. It makes you think. ^_^ I recommend it to anyone up for a challenge. I usually beat everyone I face. (Not lying...not bragging...just truth.)

Re: Favorite Board Game
Mmm. Sudoku. My dad showed me that, but I only did it once. ><
Anyways, I've been liking the Da Vinchi Code. It's really neat... you have to make shapes out of these two certain shapes out of a design called the 'Infinity Flower' or something like that. They have a list of shapes with certain numbers. It's quite hard, but challenging and fun. Just up my alley.

Re: Favorite Board Game
Hey there Comrade!
Hmmmn... I would have to say Balderdash, "The Bluffing Game". The way it works is that you are given a rarely used or humorous sounding word, such as "Barbone", and you write down what you think the defenition is or what you think could fool the other competetors- who have the same objective. While this is going on, the "Dasher" (who announced the word earlier in the game) writes down the real defenition and mixes it into the pot along with the contrived ones. If your defenition gets picked as the real one by another player, you move one space on the board for each time it is chosen. If you chose the actual defenition out of all the fake ones, you move two spaces. This game is just a hoot to play at parties and family gatherings. Another name for this game is "Fictionary". BTW- Barbone: an Eastern European bovine throat disease I also like Sudoku, but I'm not sure it would qualify as a board game.

Re: Favorite Board Game
Board games... Haven't played those in a while. And we don't have a huge collection.
There's nothing quite like Monopoly by the gas fire on cold winter nights, but those games lasted so long that by 11, we were all tired and hyper and once and basically throwing small metal game pieces at each other and robbing the bank for money. It's a fun game, but does eat up nights. I also like Risk, but I suck at that game. And we've lost a lot of the little playing pieces, so our games probably aren't even fair anymore. And ever since we started buying the Civ PC games and playing Advanced Wars, a board game like Risk just isn't worth it much anymore. Cranium, on the other hand, is really fun but we only were able to get the family together to play it once. It was really fun that one time though, so it's probably my favorite board game. Board game/trivia game/art contest/spelling bee type thing... Monopoly is classic, though. |

Re: Favorite Board Game
My favorite board games? Well I'll give you my favorite top ten:
1. Settlers of Catan: The first time I played this game was a little more than a year ago, and boy is it fun. It isn't a well known game (at least I don't think it is), but if any of you get the chance, take it, you will not be disappointed. Pretty much the game is about, you are a settler (of Catan) and you have to build your own town, make it into a city, build roads, and try to become the most successful city at the end by collecting and trading brick, sheep, coal, wood, and other necessaties(sp?) 2. Stratego: I haven't played this game in a long long time. To put it simply, you are a general of an army of soldiers ranking from 1-10 (I believe). The higher the rank (1 being the best) the better. The object of the game is to cross enemy lines, defeat the enemy, and capture the opponent's flag before he capture's yours. 3. Risk: I learned about Risk after I've played Stratego for awhile. Everyone knows the basis of this game. Control your army, defeat others, and conquer the world. Great game if you want to practice ruling the world in the mid 20th century. 4. Chess: The king of games (no not Yu-gi-oh). If you haven't noticed so far, I love strategy games and this one would have to be the most famous of them all. Favorite game pieces? I know it may sound cliché but I like the Knight and the Queen. Those two are clearly the most powerful game pieces (excluding the most important one of course) in my honest opinion. I could never beat the computer (that is how I learned to play) but it challenged me and help me be a better strategist against other human players. 5. Battleship: "You sunk my Battleship!"...I don't know why the battleship gets so much praise. My favorite ship was the destroyer (for some reason, it was harder for my sisters to find it...so it was my good luck charm). 6. Dominoes: No not the kind that you build them up and knock them down. The kind that you sorta make a snake-like pathway (think of it like "go fish"). I'm sure many of you have played this game too, so no need in describing how to play it. 7. Life: Ah, here's another great family game that I haven't played in a long long time. Going to college, getting a job, get married, have twins, get stock, and then get retired. Apparently that's "Life". One thing that my parents disagreed with the game was the retirement home (most latino families don't put their elders in homes, they just live with the family members). 8. Checkers: One of the first strategy games nearly every child plays (and it's one of the oldest. It's been dated back to the times of the "Arabian Nights"). Just saying "King me" is satisfying enough. Not much of a strategy game, but it's a great starter (like I already mentioned). But it does make you learn that "Sometimes you have to sacrifice to be able to win". So essentially you have to lose a little to gain a lot. The only big tip I can give you is this: Never move the four end pieces (the ones for "King me" of course) unless it's your only resort, or you are very very confident enough that victory is yours. 9. Reversi: To be quite honest, I've never played this game on a board game (eventhough I know it is one), but I've played it on the computer. This is one of the only games that I can actually beat the computer at (other than checkers). The basis of the game is pretty much this: Try to fill up the board with as many as your colored game pieces. Of course the rules are more complicated than that, but I still have one more game to explain about. 10. Mancala: In general, I haven't played a board game in a long time (the last time I did was about eight months ago playing checkers), but this would have to be the longest. What first attracted me to this game were all the pretty beads. Eventhough I usually lose to my opponent in this game, I can't help but try and try again. -BGS

Re: Favorite Board Game
I liked Monopoly best because I would always win! I always used to win at Life too though..... Still Monopoly. I also own the starwars monopoly and I love crushing my parents and brother at it. They are NOT good at handling money. Plus being the bank has it's ups. Monopoly is number one in my book!

Re: Favorite Board Game
Chess - I find this to be one of the few games that actually makes me feel productive in any sense and my dad has yet to find a way to critcize this as an utter waste of time. I think it really develops the mind and if there is a time limit for the moves, if you're into it that much, then it only gets you on the road to making smart and quick desicions. I happen to be pretty bad at it both in detecting attacks and formulating any good strategies, but it's so rewarding to outsmart your opponent and seize the victory.
Monopoly - This gets very time consuming(I have yet to finish a game in my whole entire lifetime) and not particulairly quick paced, but on the good side of things, I guess it helps your judgement and knowing how to take advantage of your luck. |

Re: Favorite Board Game
My favorite board game would have to be D&D, if it can be even counted as a board game.
The level of customization is great.

Re: Favorite Board Game
My favorite board game would have to be chess. I like chess because you have to think to win. swiping out all the pieces is'nt every thing in this game.
