Buy Nothing Day 2005

http://www.adbusters.org/home/

On November 25, 2005, will be held yet another Buy Nothing Day. On this day, As many people as possible will stop following along with the madness that destroys our economy, the madness that has become part of our culture: over-consumation. On this day, as many people as possible will pause and make the choice not to buy something, to shrink our ecological footprint and regain some calm. We will stop the madness and rething the unsustainable course of hyper-consuming.

Will you join in?

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

I really don't like buy nothing day. if you think about it, you'll end up buying the same amount, just on different days. same thing with that "boycott gas day" they had a while ago. I'm strongly against consumerism too, but this isn't thing isn't gonna demonstrate anything.

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

Yes and no. I won't buy anything myself, being penniless at the moment (It's ****ing crazy to shop on Black Friday, anyhow), but I'll be catering to everyone desiring to buy decorations and such at my new job on this most Black of Fridays. First time I've had to work it at a retail store. Should be a blast.

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

I'm still going to buy things even on that day. Why should I limit myself for things that I can afford and own? It's with my own money, my own hard work of which I have gotten the money. I have every right to buy something on that day.

The over-consumption is too exaggerating. It's true that we have wasted things in our lives, but those shouldn't be enough to suddenly throw the planet into a dark era. We have a lot more resources avaliable to us, believe it or not. However scientists or others may say about our resources diminishing, they are just looking far into the future (fifty to a hundred years or even more).

Ecology is important, but so are our lives. I'm sure the human race will think of something in the future about this gradually disappearing resources. But if such day was to come much earlier than what others were imagining, then so be it. It's life.

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

Black Friday is when all the stores have their big sales. It's massive. It's the Friday after Thanksgiving every year, the 25th this year. I'm not sure of the actual meaning behind it, or how it got it's name, but that's when people line up outside stores just to get good deals.

http://www.bf2005.com/ - This years website that lists alot of Black Friday sales ahead of time. Very handy. I guess Walmart is having a blowout on some sort of laptop this year? $378 - $388 for it.

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

You know, It is pretty hard to not buy anything. I can say that I would buy minimally. Say I absolutely need gas, I would buy it. But I dont see why they would have it on Black friday Either. Probably a coincidence though.

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

I think I'm already conserative enough with my money(my friends always accuse me of being Übercheap) so there is no need in my eyes. I doubt that refraining from buying anything for one day is going to do much, but of course, I guess I must look into it deeper. Hyper consumption does not seem like a huge threat to me, personally but I probably don't understand the specifics of it, so I'll shut up.

Ah, hippie protests. Such fun. I love the fact that people think that "protesting" consumerism will do anything. It's almost cute, really. It's also amusing that the adbusters site wants you to buy things.

Feel free to adhere to this "Buy Nothing Day." Meanwhile, I will....

Re: Buy Nothing Day 2005

I think Black Friday got its name because black means good in the stock-market lingo or something or other. Something like that. Red means bad, I think.

Anyway, I'm not going shopping then, but only because it'll be a madhouse. Not because I'm boycotting the purchasing of goods. And I don't really have anything I need to buy urgently.

That's right, Mini. For those of you not clear on what Black Friday is, view the wikipedia entry on it.
