A question about newbies
I don't mean to sound like a total n00b.
Do you think there is a time and post count when a person passes the newbies stage ? HOw long does a person have to be here to be considered a vet? What defines a vet ? Does being a vet define how cool and mature you are ? For me I think being a vet does't define if you are a good poster or not it just defines how popular you are . What't your say about this ?

*sees n00b*
*eats n00b* Mmmm, n00b :0) A newbie stops being a newbie when they care about ZU enough to think about the effects of their posts.

Re: A question about newbies
It all depends from person to person...there comes a time when you just realise you are not a newbie anymore. You cannot say that when you pass a certain post count or time that you stop being a newbie...you can be here for a year and still be a total n00b, plus someone can post heaps and still be a silly n00b.
In other words...do n00bish things and your a n00b, simple.

Re: A question about newbies
"n00b" is a stupid word, "newb" is also a stupid word.
I'd say if you don't act like a dumb!@# then your status is supressed. It's a cumulative respect issue, it builds up over time. There isn't a specific point when someone can shed free of their "n00b" status.

Re: A question about newbies
I've quit using the word n00b to describe an idiot on the internet, because n00bs themself use the word and think they're cool doing it. The proper term for this is, 'internet moron'
As for my definiton of newbs and such, heres a list: Newb- Person who has been here for 3 months Member- Person who has been here for more than 3 months Onebie- Person who has been here for a year or more Oldibe (or vet)- Person who has been here for 2 years or more.

Re: A question about newbies
The day you stop caring about your status on the boards, stop screaming n00b to members that act stupid and show common sense, around then, I might stop thinking of you as a newb.
It's different from person to person. Heh, you can be here for years on end and you'll still be thought of as a newb if you act like one. ![]()

A vet is someone who has at least been here for a year. So follow and understand what my rank says, because it's true

When does a person become a "vet." If all a vet is is someone who's been around for a long time, then it's anyone who's been around for around two years or so. Of course, there's the "oldbies" which may be that group of vets and more well-known members who remember "the good ol' days" and have all the inside jokes and call each other by their first names instead of their screennames. Or it could just be another name for vet, depends on how you look at it. As for a vet defining how popular or cool you are, I don't think so, at least if you use the "oldbie" definition of a vet. There are quite a few members who have been around as long or longer than some of the "oldbies" who are not as well known or considered as cool I'm sure. |

Re: A question about newbies
Once you get to the point where status and postcount aren't really that important to you, and you've become accustomed to the rules, then I'd suppose you aren't a newb anymore.
As for oldbies/vets, I tend to think of them as people who've been here for about two years or so, and are fairly well known on the boards.

Re: A question about newbies
I consider a vet to be someone who is well known. Someone who has a post in many of the threads. A newb used to be someone who I have never heard of before. That all changed when it became easier to change your username. But I never thought about that before.

![]() I really don't look at the join date much anyway. It's usually the posters' spelling, grammar, insight, and clarity that usually does it for me. Oh, and humor, of course. For certain people, being a newbie can be an awesome thing. Lots of new people show up, post insightful comments, to prove themselves. There's such a thing as "message board burnout," you know.

Re: A question about newbies
A newbie is simply someone who's new to the site. A newbie could be a smart, cool person.
A n00b is anyone who acts retarded. i.e. bad grammar, spelling, seemingly missing a brain...they could have been a member for a long period of time and still be a n00b. A vet is...I dunno, someone who's been at the forum for a while and doesn't need to be corrected much or at all. They have intelligent posts...but they still don't have to be overly serious. Uh oh.....I'm feeling something coming on....aaaaggghhh... *N00B SPASM!* zOmg, 800 posts! I'm a vet now, right?!?1!11/?!??!?!?//! *dances* |

Vets have common sense. Noobs don't. Vets are generally well-known, and their comments appreciated. Noobs are generally regarded somewhere between pond scum and morning breath.
