Your opinion on Legos?

Personally, I think the Lego company has been going downhill for a while. I guess a lot of younger kids like the stuff, but the sets aren't as cool and fresh and interesting as they used to be. And it's not just that I've grown out of Legos...I still think the older stuff like Adventurers (way back with the desert theme) and town stuff was so much better than what they have now: Bionicle, Titans vs. the Dinosaurs, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc.

Now, I don't play with Legos much at all anymore (especially with school!) but I do occasionally, randomly build a seven-floor mansion with an elevator and the like. Not that I care much, but I think Lego should go back to making good stuff instead of "cool stuff". I'm not sure how that would affect the company, since the biggest source of money is from 10 year olds who like the sort of thing they're making right now. But I just think the old sets lasted longer, and you could use the pieces to build about anything. Nowadays, the sets are made up of a ton of complex pieces that you can't really use for much.

Anyway. I probably should stop now. What do you think about the Lego company? Do you still like them? Did you ever like them? Do you like the direction they're going?

I didn't put a poll on because I wasn't sure what kind of answers I'd be getting, and this leaves more room for discussion. A lot of people just like to vote without posting.

*pointless topic! Lol*

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

I stick with the basic set. I don't care for the kits with licensed characters. Although it's meant to expand my imagination, I just feel it hinders it moreso. But yeah, I remember it fondly. I used to make robots, trains, dinosaurs, and the like. Don't think I ever had enough, so me and my brother would spend lots of time revising our models, rebuilding, and demolishing. Sounds lame, but hey, we were young and bored. My brother, aged thirteen, still plays with them occasionally. He basically created his own "world" made up of video game character fragments, but usually just inspirations in a name(ie. Sonic the Sonic in the land of Hyrule with Wizardkid and Diver who hang out at Diver burger. O_o). Yeah. Fun stuff-- love how it promotes imaginatino too.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

They've been boring ever since 2002. I hate the new sets and I think they're overpriced anyway. Don't get me wrong I love Lego, but the new sets don't make me happy anymore.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

I loved Legos when I was a kid!

*nostalgic moment*

I had four big, gallon, ice-cream buckets that were filled with various Lego pieces. I'd build all sorts of castles and stuff. Too bad they never looked as great as the box. I didn't like some of the themed stuff as much, with super-complex pieces and stuff. They weren't as much fun.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

oh man...I played with legos for about 10 years. started with the basic blocks and then moved up to technic, and finally mindstorms. so much better than barbie dolls and crap toys.

yeah, the theme sets are stupid. I got a couple, but I never followed the instructions. I wish lego would just stick with the basics.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

Oh wow.. legos..

I'll be honest- I have no idea what thy're up to now so I can't say if I like their new stuff or not. But I used to be really, really, really into it when I was younger. I loved it so much.

I read over everyone elses posts on the new stuff and it doesn't look like legos is doing too well O_o... but I think that if I had the chance to toy around with the new stuff, I'd probably enjoy it purely for childhood and sentimental "those-were-the-days" reasons

Umm... Legos?

I always loved to play with them, not so much anymore, but they were always so expensive so the chances I had were scarce.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

I adore Legos. I have a 10 gallon bucket full of these pieces from various Lego model sets that I bought. I don't mind the theme sets, becasue I usualy build the model, leave it up for 2 weeks or so and then take it apart and add it to my collection of my Legos. I have 2 small boxes full of pieces that aren't normal in Legos (like winsheilds, moutains, wheels, etc.) or pieces that I don't want to spend 30 minutes looking for.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

I remember legos. I loved it! Lately though, they are pretty crap. I used to have a box filled with them. Untill we stopped playing with them, now there scattered all over the house, or in the garage somewhere. I remember i used to make spaceships out of them. Not like rockets, but with that moveable top that you can see through, and wheels and stuff. But i tried to make it as moveable as possible. Eventually, it got boring just walking around the house holding it up, and i stopped playing with it.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

Legos. I loved them so much. I still do, but not the model ones. I did like the scenery lego sets a lot better, and I still have my legos in a huge bin. My favorite was the little green square with a road on it that you could build on.

I wish they'd go back to being what they were. :/

Good times, Lego role playing was the best, building forts for them and then thinking of them having little parties in there.

I used to love playing with Lego when I was young. Jesus, I wouldn't say no if someone gave me Lego to play with these days. Building stuff's fun. Fact.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

Oh yeah, I loved those. I still have a huge pile of Legos somewhere, but I haven't touched them for years. My big brother and big sister bot liked Legos, and they gave me all of theirs when they grew out of playing with them. Good times, good times.

Can't say I've paid much attention to new sets for the last years, though. I'm pretty sure they're not as awesome as they used to be, anyway.

Legos aren't getting younger, you're just getting older.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

I can't remember what Legos was like when I still played it, but I definitely enjoyed the free form blocks more. The kinds with specific items and characters don't seem as enjoyable, but I can't really judge since I've outgrown them all.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

i had sooo many Legos. i loved them! i had the huge cowboy set with the wall and city inside. Old School ones of course. they were my favorite toy becaus ei loved building them.

i havnt had any for a long time, and the more recent ones i have seen had big peices and were much easier to put together then the old ones. they arent even fun anymore...unless you get the more advanced sets, and then i guess i would love to have them again

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

Wow, I got more replies than I expected.

I had one thing to mention...

I gathered so many Legos that I was forced to seperate them by color (red is seperated by shape, as well) just so that we could find things. It's still really awful trying to find things, though, especially in the "black box". It's pretty big, and there are a bunch of big pieces in there. We used to keep the strings with anchors and stuff attached in there. They got tangled beyond un-tanglement, and we had to cut off the anchors and throw away the clod of string, lol.

We also have a ton of people (or as some people say, minifigures). We like to make them look good and normal. I hate when kids come over and mess with everything. They usually make people bald, or with dumb clothes that don't match with the helmet, etc.

Anyway. I used to build towns on our ping-pong table. It was always a challenge to arrange the streets and houses to look interesting and fit on the table at the same time. We would make the kind of houses that are nice and big, and the roof lifts off so you can get inside. We made a big mansion like that once, but the floors were really weak, and we didn't do it again. Now most of the houses are the boring open-back kind, because we're lazy.

Re: Your opinion on Legos?

Legos are dead. They used to be great- just blocks in all these different rectangular shapes and sizes that could stick together and form big, amazing things if you took the time. They had wheels, and windsheilds, some had circular pieces, some had hinges, some had small flat pieces made to look like keyboards or something similiar. They were basic and accessible to all ages. Blocks don't have an age limit. The golden days...

Then, they started to get specialized. They came with lights, they came with wings that only fit on certain pieces. They came out with specialized tail pieces and wheels and body pieces. It wasn't too bad, but it was still limiting Lego's original creativity.

Then they started doing Star Wars, and Harry Potter, and coming out with their own specialized sets, like the "Artic Crew" or whatever. Those sets were only capable of building one or two things, and that was it. You had no hope of using the pieces in those kits to build a house if it was made to build a snowmobile. They were fun until you finished constructing your snowmobile and rolled it across the floor. Then you were through with it, and it went in the back of the closet never to be touched again (in my case).

Now all the sets are like that. They're made for one thing, and one thing only. I miss when it was the blocks that could be made into anything. If it was still like that, I might purchase a kit sometime. But all I see now is lisenced characters in block form.

Actauly, you CAN build other things from the sets. I mean, I find ways of incorpirating the big baseplates, odd size bricks and other types of Legos when I build models. In fact, when I made my most recent model of a downtown scenes, I found craetive and good ways to make it look like futuristic type of architechure.
