Knitting

It just occured to me that in all of my time here there has never been a thread about knitting.

How many here at ZU knit? It's a fabulous hobby, in my opinion. It does wonders relieving stress, and once you're good, you get nice, unique garments at relatively low prices (Yarn and needles are getting more and more expensive, sadly -- I just bought a 20$ pair of circulars).

I consider myself a fairly good knitter, but I've never done anything too complicated -- I've made countless socks, some scarves (most recently a very nice, but very easy Harry Potter (Ravenclaw!) scarf), and one sweater.

Share patterns here and if it's possible to have any lenghty discussion about knitting (or crocheting, tatting, etc if you're into that), I say go for it.

Re: Knitting

Ah, that is quite intriguing! Although I, myself, do not knit, it is popular amoung female peers at my school.

One of the best gifts you can get your boyfriend/girlfriend is something knitted. It's heartwarming, and always means something special. He/she will most likely treasure it forever.

In general knitted goods make good gifts for anyone.

Re: Knitting

I've knitted one scarf in my entire life, and I love it to bits. It's made of the fluffy, feathery material, and I blended two multicoloured yarns together so it's very iridescent.
Imagine me wearing that and my green-and-silver-stars-and-crescents earmuffs.

Re: Knitting

I have been knitting quite alot even though I've never really made anything very special. When I was younger I wanted to make a blanket out of many small squares. I still have them but I havent bothered to put them together yet..
We had a project about knitting last year at school so I made a long scarf in red and black. I dont know what the techinique is called but it gave the scarf a special texture that i dont know how to explain...

Re: Knitting

I've considered knitting a lot, but I don't know where in the world I can find the needles. It would be cool to try, though.

Re: Knitting

I learned knitting about a year ago in... *shudder* home ec class. I should also drop that I was probably the least proficent out of anybody. I blame it for the fact that I missed a whole year in sewing where everybody else had the experience and idea(I transfered to that school). I got a C while most everybody got higher marks for their projects. Maybe it's since I just made a blux box out of it...eh. It's a neat skill...but I don't think I'm up for it.

Stores like wal-mart and zellers have small selections of yarn and needles, as should any craft stores.

I would recommend trying to find a nice independent yarn/knitting store -- if you're in a big city like Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, or Montreal, there is sure to be something.

I go to Yarn Forward, myself. There are two location in Ottawa.
This is the kind of selection at a good independant yarn store:

Wal-mart has a single aisle of cheap yarn.

Re: Knitting

I can knit, Crochet, and needlepoint. I watched my mom knit when I was around 12 or 13 years old, and took it from there, as for crochetting, I learned that from my grandma about the same age or when I was a little older, I don't really recall. As for needlepointing, I learned that from both my mom and grandma by watching them and mimicking as they did it.

However, I haven't really made anything from knitting, crochetting, or needlepointing yet, but I do have a knit/crochet/needlepoint bag somewhere in my bedroom closet that I use from time to time. That is, Whenever I'm not on the computer.

Re: Knitting

I know a little about knitting, but I'm pretty bad at it. I've made a blue scarf, and then I started on a second scarf. It's really pretty easter colors. However, I keep messing up and tying it it knots. Then I have to go to a little yarn shop and let them get it fixed. It's lost right now,but if I knew where it was I would work on it.

Re: Knitting

My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was about 13. I've only ever completed one project and that was a scarf for my older sister. It was made of soft, baby blue yarn. I'm curently trying to make a poncho but I got the design off the internet and I think I must have read something wrong because it's not turning out as I hoped. But I do enjoy knitting even if nothing ever actually comes from it. It helps relieve stress and is good for people with arthritice (Which I have in my legs, I'm hoping it won't spread to my hands). I don't knit as much as I would like to though. Maybe I should knit a sweater for my new puppy? ANyone have any good paterns for something like that?

Re: Knitting

I'd like to learn how to knit (I have too much free time) but I have no clue how to, and I don't really know anyone who does.
Can anyone recommend a good how-to-knit book?

I learned how to knit once, but by the morning afterwards, I had just forgotten. It was weird.
