Names

One thing I have never understood is how in modern society, there are certain "Official Names" like Jack, John, Paul, Andy, Laura, Lucy, Jane etc. etc. etc. that people feel they have to choose from when naming a child. Surely a name should be unique, because the person themself is? People should be more inventive when it comes to this, so that the child can be proud of their individuality.

Re: Names

I feel my name is only a tag of who I am in the society and not in my personality. It helps people recognising me and using my name in a conversation instead of 'that guy'. I find names purely practical.

Sure, it's nice to have a beautiful, unique name that means something, but should you judge people on that then? No certainly not, you would say, then why bother? Uniqueness is to be achieved trough character, and nothing else.

Re: Names

I don't mind much having a commen name, I'm not one to care about how unique you are, because in reality, everybody thinks of everybody else as the same, kind of like a Stereotype. Some people like their kids to be named after a figure, maybe a family member who died, a parent's idle, or possibly because the name just suits the face. How we got the names, well a lot of names come from different names, like 'Bill' is the same as 'William', or in a sense that they're derived from different names, names may also come from such books as the Bible, however, this is not about religion, but it is likely that quite a few names originated from those eras.

Re: Names

Aaron is a pretty unique name. There is only one other person I know with that name, and it's my best friend's sister, and her name is Erin so it's not really the same. But uh.. yeah.

Names are cool. Just pick one like... Max Powers.

Re: Names

Wow, I thought I was the only one here named Aaron.

Yeah, I do agree, there should be more individuality when naming children. As long as they don't name them after video game/movie characters, like the couple who named their kid Sephiroth. But, come on, who wouldn't get a kick out of getting named Florgus Flooga [insert last name]?

DON'T YOU DARE MOCK MY PARENTS! Just joking!

Yep, I agree that naming after video game characters is definitely not cool. Imagine being called Link. The novelty would wear off very quickly.
Which only backs up my point that completely original names are best. If you are named after someone, their is a possibility of assosiations being made about you with your namesake. Believe me, I've seen a friend bullied over their name...

Re: Names

I wish I could have named myself.

The fact of the matter is that a large amount of people of society are dead inside, and have little or no creativity. Although it would take an extraordinarily large amount of creativity to make up a new name and name their child that.

Re: Names

I like my name. Not a lot of people I know are named Alex, plus many famous conquers and leaders had the name Alex. Like Alexander the Great, Alexander II, (Russian Czar) and the fictional character from A Clockwork Orange, Alex de Large. In fact, my name means 'one who is above the law' or 'protector of men'.

As for name changes, i don't really care what you name your kid. As long as you don't intend to name your child after a videogame character, I'm fine with it.

Re: Names

I've actually grown fond of my name which is George. It's a very simple and old fashioned name, and I didn't like it for a long time for that reason. In recent years I have learned to like it much more because there are not many guys that are my age now named George. I don't know any around here that are.

Our name makes each of us unique no matter if it's plain or not. George is a plain name, but the people who know me associate it with me and my personality. Thus, it becomes uniquely me. ^^

Re: Names

I don't really mind to any extent. I don't feel that my name kind of gives impressions of what my inner character is-- because frankly, I don't understand how that works. My name isn't very common as it is anyway, so it's no problem when I feel unrefined or having a lack of uniqueness-- actually, that is remidied by the fact that I am drastically different from most everybody else. I think you tend to stick to it for so long that it dosen't really matter anymore, as if its instinct to accept for what it is and such. I can't imagine myself without any other name, in all honesty.

Re: Names

I like the name, Mihalii-Yannis - cos it's individual, but there are the select few idiots who have to make up little chants about it.
If I had the choice, I would re-name myself Sayoran - I just love the 'fluidity' of the name, whereas Mihall reminds me of jelly, or something clumsy.

The only reason we have names is so when we are talking to someone directly, we don't have to say "You. . . . .the red head, no, I mean the red head in front of you" but if everyone keeps naming their kids the same thing, there isn't really any point in names at all.

Unique is good but naming your kid after a video game is like naming you kid after a gold fish you had ten years ago.

My brothers, Fishy and Donkey Kong, nearly cried when I showed them this...

That is a very good way of phrasing what I'm trying to say. Names are used to identify people, but if we're all called the same thing they are rendered useless.

Re: Names

My name is Ian. It's a pretty unique name. As I was growing up I noticed that no one else shared the same name as me. As I got older I met new people disproving myself, but still.

I like my name.

Re: Names

Luckily, my name's quite rare where I live. So far I haven't met a single person with the same name as me, or rarely even heard of such a person in Sweden for that matter (though I am sure they are out there).

So I'm unique, as I always am with most things.
