This is freaking scary.

We have a tornado warning here in Northern Utah. Wow. PARTY!!!

I mean, TAKE COVER!!!

The news people say that very strong storm cells are moving east over the Great Salt Lake. I can see the GSL from my front porch. Wow. The sky is all dark, and the sunset makes it look reddish, too. Cool.

You see, we here in Utah very rarely get severe weather. The only tornado we've ever had was back in '99 in Salt Lake City. But WOW. This is BIG. My sister, who lives in Roy (for you locals) just called hysteric and she's on her way here with her 2 small kids. I'm gonna go outside and watch the show.

Any advice for surviving tornados?

Re: This is freaking scary.

We used to get tornadoes all the time when we lived in Iowa. Surviving a tornado is pretty much luck of the draw. They don't normally come into urban areas, so as long as you don't live out in the country, you should be okay. Things you can do to improve your odds are:

Go in the basement
Stay away from windows
Get under something

That is all.

I do like very dark, stormy, atmospheric weather. I bet your sky is beautiful right now. I remember once when our sky was green. That was awesome.

Re: This is freaking scary.

Finally, somebody makes a thread on the one thing i lvoe more than writing, Meteorology! *I'm gonna be a news team weather dude when Im older* For Tornado survival, move to the lowest floor in your house, basement if you have one. If you have no basement, move into the central-most room of ur house on the lowest floor, (making sure it has no windows) and cover yourself with the thickest and softest thing you can find. Also, if the tornado is passing directly over your house (which, if it lands nearby, is rare, because one side of ur street can be obliterated while the other looks peaceful), try to breathe in as much as you can when u hear the first sounds of destruction, reasons obvious.

Ah, I am now refreshed!

Re: This is freaking scary.

Tornadoes. Possibly my biggest fear. I hate them and I've been in one, absolutly horrifying. Stay in your basement, and listen to the weather on a radio. Take cover and stay away from windows as Shiek said. Don't panic, that is what I did and it wasn't a pretty scene.

Still, the site of storms are very beautiful.

Re: This is freaking scary.

I did a report on tornadoes for science this year(though I live near the mountains, so I've never actually experienced a tornado, making that report ((up until now, that is)) pretty pointless). Well, from my research, I can say that you should do what everyone else here already said. Go in a basement, or a room with no windows if you don't have a basement. Stay under something, and stay away from wires, in case something happenes to the electricity. Erm, yeah...that's all I can remember without searching for my report, which is hidden in my piles of junk. I'm afraid I'm not very helpful.

Re: This is freaking scary.

Well, no tornado ever actually touched down, no injuries or damage. Just a lot of lightning and rain. But it was eerily beautiful!

You have the clear skies around, and just this huge gathering of clouds. The sky was purple, greenish, blackish, all that good stuff.

Even if a tornado DID touch down, it would be about a mile south of us (but they can travel fast, I know). And our house is 117 years old, with 12 inch-thick walls filled with bricks. Our basement is seems like a great place to hide.

Now, we gotta watch out for...earthquakes! They keep saying "The big one is coming" and "Not 'if', but 'when'". I'm really worried about earthquakes, but it did help that I was in a small one recently. Helped me know what's coming.

Re: This is freaking scary.

I'm in Virginia and I thought we couldn't have any earthquakes, but we did. It wasn't too bad from what I remember. Any place could get an earthquake even if its just a small tremor that doesn't do anything. And I don't think we get tornados where I live.

What to do during an earthquake...I don't really know.

Re: This is freaking scary.

There really's not much you can do. You're a suppose to stand in a doorway. This doesn't seem very helpful, but that is what you are supposed to do. If you're not in a house...well....stay away from glass, buildings, cars, those kind of things.

Glad you're OK. If ever a tornado appears again and hits, just remember, Panic, panic, PANIC! Oh wait...
Seriously, be careful if you live in an area with loads of tornados. As well as getting into a basement, if you have time, take some rations, because you might get trapped down there!
Luckily, nothing ever happens in England.
Even droughts are rare...

Re: This is freaking scary.

At least you get tornado warning. A freak tornado ripped through a city called Birmingham, not far from where I live, a few days ago. People are not allowed back to their homes! Oh yeah, I hope you survive...... and you should get into a basement....

Re: This is freaking scary.

Man you are one lucky/unlucky person! The reason I say you are lucky is because, I live on the West Coast, and we NEVER get tornadoes, except for the exception of the one in South City. I'm sort of a thrill seeker, and I love Dark Atmospheres, so it's too bad I wasn't there with you. And I say unlucky because of obvious reasons.

Re: This is freaking scary.

I LOVE the days where there is a huge thunderstorm, and it's so cloudy, it's dark all day. Though I do get annoyed after awhile though if the electricity goes out.

Tornando Warnings don't usually last long, so as I'm typing this, the Warning may as well already be over. If it's a really bad one though, take cover in the lowest floor in your house, in the center if said floor isn't you basement.

Re: This is freaking scary.

Well, i have never been through a massive tornado, not many people have.

I have only been through really 'small' ones, that have stronger forces than a hurricane, but arent as big. More like... really really big wind gusts...putting that lightly.

I never seem to get sick of storms, so far in the past three days we have had lightning EVERY evening ... but no rain lol. I LOOOOVE the noise lightning makes, i just love the sound of thunder and such. I think storms are so neat, and i love to just stand in rain and cool off somtimes lol.

But still, i wouldnt go out and 'play' in a tornado. (<--WELL DUH) I do it in hurricanes, because they are not as quick in distruction, just a really huge storm. IT is fun to stand outside, and lean to the ground, but the wind will pick you up. heh.

I'll say it for the second time: Nothing happened.

I'll say it again: No tornados touched down.

One more time: It was AWESOME!
