Explosions in London

Just hours after winning the 2012 Olympic Bid, London has been rocked by a number of explosions. Details are sketchy at the moment.

Check out: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...7/s1409463.htm for more.

How will this affect London after just winning the olympic bid? It's not known if it's a terrorist attack or what but it does seem suspicious as there were several explosions in different areas. Also, will this take focus away from poverty at the G8 summit?

This event could have a great affect on a lot of things going on at the moment. Post your thoughts here.

Re: Explosions in London

It's the french taking revenge for the olympics!!

No, I doubt it. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the G8 having a meeting at this moment. Al-qaida (sp) Has most likely planned these attacks weeks/months before.

So far i've heard that there were 5 explosions in the subway, and 3 epxlosions on busses. 2 deaths (many more probably) and over 90 are injured.

I hope that the explosions didn't kill many people. God Bless anybody who lost someone.

Re: Explosions in London

..

Why is everyone talking as though it was a nuclear attack?
London got attacked. Most politicians were expecting it.
It is a highly charged time. London and the UK in general poses as an ideal target in many ways.
The G8 summit is taking place in the UK. Especially after all the recent Live8 concerts, people are charged and aware of teh role of those rich countries in manufacturing poor countries. This is one aspect

Another is the symbolic nature of London as head of Europe. If any terrorist organisation wants to say anything to Europe, the UK is now the focal point. By targetting the UK, it'll be as though the whole of Europe is.

Also, the obvious reason: The UK has aided America in it's unjustified war against Iraq.
I was most amused and shocked at all the sympathy and apathy that Blair had when talking of the 2 dead in London. He doesn't bat an eyelid when British troops are shooting and bombing and raiding the nights of Baghdad and Fallujah. Maybe one day we'll be able to see a more Just system, where ALL life is valued.

Re: Explosions in London

We'll, sucks for london...
It's a shame that things like this still go on all over the world.
It's even more of a shame that the people who have the power to end such pointless violence, won't.

That system certainly shall not be led by mankind, I will guarantee that.

I am thankful to DarkTachyon for filling me in on the facts of this case, outside of ZU--I was mostly in the dark on this.

I anticipate destruction on a more grand scale is soon to follow. Very soon. Perhaps then we will begin to value the losses on both sides a little higher.

Re: Explosions in London

There are a few zu members in London, Feline Witch is one. Lets be hoping they're alright. But anyway, I have the day off school and this is on the t.v right now. Last I heard was that there were 10 deaths and over 150 injured. It probably is terrorists but hey, I just hope there aren't gonna be anymore explosions.

Re: Explosions in London

"Islamic group claims London attack" per MSNBC.com

Hmm. According to this news story, “The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe” claims responsibility behind the attacks, and this is retaliation for Britain’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
*shakes head*

You know, I read about Britain getting the Olympics in 2012, and while I was reading the stories *yesterday* I started to come down with this overwhelming sense of sadness, and loss. I actually started crying. I quickly dismissed those feelings, because I thought it silly I would get so over emotional because of the Olympics.

It's quite possible that I somehow sensed what was going to happen today, and was morning over the loss yesterday. *shiver*
I saw this on the local news this morning, and I instantly burst out crying.
I feel for all those in Britain right now, and I really hope everyone unaccounted from is alright. Personally, there is a woman in my office who's nephew just flew over to London yesterday, and was scheduled to arrive today, in the midst of all the chaos. She has yet to be able to get ahold of him, so everyone is very worried about his wherabouts.

*shakes head* I really don't have the words to describe what I'm feeling right now....

Re: Explosions in London

As for now, its mostly chaos. The number of explosions are changing, and so are the death and injure count. We just have to wait for the facts to come up at a later point. Now there is no time for a closer analyse. And as Cantryboy said: God bless the ones who have lost someone. God bless them all.

Al Qaeda does typically deal in multiple coordinated attacks, a la the Madrid Bombings or 9/11.

The Brits are a stout people, I'm sure they'll soldier on. My deepest sympathies go out to all the innocent people injured in this attack.

Re: Explosions in London

The TV behind me is on and playing, talking about it as I write this. I first heard about it early in the morning when I got up to go do my sport at roughly 5:30. It has me very worried, and it feels like an Al Qaeda attack. Just months ago they said that they were ready to attack America again ... perhaps this is just the beginning of something more huge. Maybe they're bombing London to distract us and take our eyes off of ... something. But I don't know about that. Our government seems to be too dumb to see anything right in front of their noses at the moment. My state - Minnesota - has been shut down and closed because they're too blinded by greed to agree on some stupid argument over more money.

Re: Explosions in London

When will people learn that violence isn't gonna get them anywhere! People should stop this altogether....don't ask me how they'd do it cause I don't know but people need to see that taking others lives, no matter who they are, is completely wrong! But anyway, I think we should give a clap to those emergency services *claps* And all my sympathy is going to those innocent people involved.

Re: Explosions in London

It's times like this that I'm glad the collective entity of Britain exists.

Of course the media here is all over the situation, which I would have expected. Waking up and seeing this kind of thing is something that you're never prepared for, though in future I wont be so quick to dismiss the possibility of a terrorist attack in the UK.

I've been very impressed with the emergency services through all of this actually, looks as though they're handling things very well in London. Such a shame that this had to happen, especially now when it really has been a time of celebration in Britain.

Re: Explosions in London

First off, my deepest sympathies go out to those hurt by the attacks.

Now, these are not by insurgents mad that we are in Iraq. These are terrorists, or more accurately, Islamo-facists, on a religious jihad against non-muslims.
Quote:
Tragically, jihad ideology will not disappear soon. It is shaping the minds of a generation of young Muslims in many countries. Jihad ideology is a well-constructed system, created after the death of the prophet Mohammed. It has remained alive and well since then — except under secularized Muslim governments like that of Turkey, after the Kemalist revolution. It is delusional and dangerous to maintain that this ideology is rooted in social deprivation, backwardness, injustice, or despair. Moreover, paying subsidies to suspend global jihad terrorism is tantamount to paying a tribute to terrorist states, and buying one's own peace and security as temporarily ransomed privileges — instead of living by the principles of universal human rights, which proclaim the inviolability of every human being. Societies that pay a tribute to survive are destined to disappear.
More on their jihad: http://www.islamreview.com/articles/humanrights.shtml

Anybody who thinks that waving protest flags will stop people determined enough in their goal that they'll kill themselves if it means taking out a bunch of "infidels" is not going to work. Look how well that plan worked during our last presidential election. George Bush still got elected.
