Getting One's Driver's License

It'd be a cold day in hell when I spell Licsence right. Anyways, I live in da USA. (just doing that on the offchance that getting your licsense at the DMV has different policies in different countries; I'm not big on finding out forein rules) So, Im thirteen, and when i was like, oh, say four, I always knew that people got their drivers licsenses when they turned sixteen. But, now I've heard all this fluff about "If you're born after 1990, you have to get ur licsence at eighteen". Now, I'm a year older than most people in my grade, and I'd just love to see their faces when I come in to my sophmore year in highschool with a car. But if this eighteen year old minimum thing really exists, this will not be possible, and I'll never get a car until I get out of college, seeing as how the college I really want to go to doesnt allow cars on campus. (That's off topic, seeing as how I can work around that) But anyway, summariezed into one sentence, I'm asking if what they say (i.e.:"If you're born after 1990, you have to get ur licsence at eighteen") is true. So, is it?

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

I don't think it's true. I'm sitxteen and I got my driver's license when I turned fifteen( only beacuse I took driver's ed). So I don't think there is rule that you have to wait until your eighteen. I know of a law like that in Germany and France but not in America. So if you take driver's ed you can get it when you turn fifteen, otherwise you just have to wait until your sixteen. Of course, if your parents make you wait until your eighteen, then that's a different story.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

It depends on the state you live in. All I know is PA and FL are still 16...NJ you can get a temp or "Cinderella" license at 17, then renew at 18 for a permanent license and full fledged driving privelages. If any changes other than that have been made it didnt effect me n I dunno! ::shrug::...your best bet might be to just grab a DMV driving manual, theyre free at the DMV or you could probably get one from your driver's ed teacher at school.
BTW...spelling > license.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

Yeah, I don't know of an official country-wide law making you wait until you're eighteen. But in my case I have an official law, my parents. I have to be eighteen til I can drive, which is a total pain in the arse. But that's only four years, aint that bad I guess.

Oh, and it's spelled license. Ain't that hard, at all.

I'm 15, and I could get my permit right now...but I'm too lazy, and insurance costs too much, so...

In Texas, you can get your permit at 15 (as I said), and your license at 16. I've never heard of this new 1990 rule.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

I think Arizona enforces that rule... I'm not sure. I remember hearing about the law in Driver's ED, though. It is on a state-by-state basis. It's not a national law yet.

I could care less about it, really. I was born in '88, I'm 16, and I still don't have either a permit or a license. I don't think it's necessary, and driving's too friggin' scary anyways. I don't want to share the road with all of the dip****s of the world, risking my life just to go buy a book or something. I'm only going to get a license once it becomes imperative that I do. Until then, it'd just be a waste of my time.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

In my home state of Mississippi, you can get your license when your 16 and you can get a worker's permit or a learner's permit at 15. The worker's permit lets you drive between 7 AM and 10 PM for employment related reasons.

It was very simple for me to get my license. It sucks if you have to wait until you're 18 to get your license. You'll find out after you have your license that you'll run out of places to go and then you'll just sit at home like me. ^^;;

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

I've heard about this thing too, and I've asked my parents, and they have no idea what this is about either. It is probably some state thing. I won't worry about it too much, but I hope I can get my license at 16.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

Here's the lowdown on that if you live in New York.

When you turn 16 you go to your local DMV and take the written test. You then get your Permit. Now, at this point you need 20 hours of driving time with a parent, and then you need to either take Drivers Education or a 5 hour course.

If you take and pass your road test within 6 months of receiving your permit, you get a Junior Limited License. You can drive to school and work, and no one else can be in the car with you that's not a parent/guardian, and you can't drive after 9 PM. After the 6 months, you get your Junior License, which lets you drive anytime, but not after 9 PM.

Now, if you took Drivers Ed instead of the 5 hour course, you get your Senior License at age 17, which lets you drive anytime, including after 9 PM. If you only took the 5 hour course, you have to wait until you're 18 to get your Senior License.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

I believe that in Maryland and possibly DC, the after 1990 law is true, or at least will be, but I'm not 100% sure. I have heard a lot about that around here (in Maryland, the DC area) though.

But even if that is true, that doesn't affect me, since I am currently 15 and was born in January of 1990 anyway. I get my learner's this October, and if all goes well, my license next year.

If it's true in other states, I do not know.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

I live in Canada, so I don't know about that rule where you get your liscence at 18. Here, you start at 16, and then you get something called a g1. You then get g2 and then get g3, and you will then get your liscence at 17. That's how it works here.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

Well, I haven't heard of such law, but in my opinion, it is a good law. Getting a Driver's License at the age of 16 is way too early for a teenager.

But that's just me. I got my driver's license when I was 19 and two weeks after getting it, I got a car. It really helps me to go to college and work. That's about it.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

My dad will never let me drive a car by myself, once I get my driver's liscence. I bet he's jealous, just because I can beat anyone at any racing game. (Even those ones at arcades).

"Remember, driving's a privelage. Not a must."

My dad always tells me that. It's so annoying.

Re: Getting One's Driver's License

Yeah, it's different in each state, like mostly everybody else has said.

In CT, you can get your learner's permit at 16. If you take drivers ed, you have to hold the permit for 4 months before getting your license. If your parents or somebody teaches you, then you have to wait 6 months.
