Re: Popularity
I'm popular in the sense that everyone at school knows me, I know everyone at school, and I hang out with everyone. But the 'real' popular kids are preppy. So I don't sit with them, I sit with the 'cool, anti-prep' popular kids. Yeah, it's complicated, but I learned the system.

Re: Popularity
Popularity is a big thing at my school but not as extreme as sitting with different people. The main thing where I live is territorialism (I think thats a word) There are a number of different gangs around my area and lately its been quite bad outside of school with stabbings and a couple of weeks ago a 2-year-old was shot in the head with an air rifle although I don't think think that it was anything to do with gangs. I live in Glasgow and the east end of the city where I live is well known for it's gangs. If you hang around in these gangs then you are quite popular but not in a good way.
In school it's not as bad although some people judge you on what part of the area you live or come from. I was worried about being popular in my school for a while but when I stopped caring people seemed to take more notice of me and respect me more because I don't really care what happens in school. I just like hanging around with friends and having a good time. I hate when people try to be all macho and keep up a tough reputation because it will only get you through about 4 or 5 years of school and then thats it over.

Re: Popularity
Well. The way I think of it is that there are two types of things that humans often get mixed up:
Popularity and Respect. These two things often are mushed together in a sense, and they really shouldnt be. I mean, I think that Respect is different than Popularity. But unfortuneattly, people these days, and esspecially teens at school, confuse these two. But the question is why? Why do people often sacrifice their own respect that they have gained to be popular. Because honestly, popularity is NOT AT ALL like respect. You can be popular, and have respect, (allthough the respect that you recive as a popular person is more kindof forced from it) But you can have respect without popularity. And frankly, it is a mystery to me and others that people respect the popular people only because they are popular. Although i am NOT saying that all people who are popular are mean, or jerks. I have a friend who is popular, but she is respected at the same time. Just not in the bad sense- or because she forces the respect, like some popular people would. But if I had to choose between the two, I would diffentatly choose respect over popularity. It is somthing that will benifit you more than popularity.

Re: Popularity
Thank goodness my class got over the popularity bug in seventh grade (I'm in eleventh now). I guess people mature and noe pretty much everyone gets along. I hang out with everybody. I like it that way, instead of people being cliquish.

Re: Popularity
I am not popular, I am a loner. But for some strange reason, I have lots of friends, everybody seems to know who I am, and although I put on a "get away from me" persona people still hang around with me and talk to me. To me, I am not popular but to others I am. You can ask a random person if they know who I am. 75-80% they'll say yes.

Re: Popularity
When I was in school I was the hated kid in class you know the guy everyone hates and/or wants help because of his good grades(I had a B+ average in almost every class)Then there is the popular kid that are bombing school but everyone likes(why does it always end like that? Why can't the popular be smart too). You get the usual people that are jeolous and the popular that try to pick on you to get more popular then at the end of the year ask for you help to pass class(funny isn't it)I of course deny because I like seeing them get held back or go to summer school. My point is popularity is just something that is basicly envy. They think you cool then when something cooler comes along what do you got?Hehe me and my friends laugh at popular people because they have no idea.Another note why is it that in my life all the popular people are stupid and jerks.Does all that envy go to there head?

Re: Popularity
Popularity and me don't mix. I'm too boring and quiet to be popular. Luckily, on the school I used to be on (and officially still am
), the whole popularity thing isn't really that big, and people do respect me. So I don't really have problems with that. It seems to me that usually the popular people are jerks, but I know of a few exeptions, too.

Re: Popularity
Who needs popularity anyway?
In elementary/primary school it may be important but I've found that as you grow up, you care less about it.

Re: Popularity
I'm respected for being "Teh Anti-cool". Someone called me a nerd, and since then over the years I have gathered an army of nerds who proudly call themselves nerds, and campaign against the evils of hair-gel and popularity.
Doo doo, doo doo doo doooo dooooo. ----- I have a dream. A dream where bookworms, chessfreaks and popular kids live together in harmony. Wherewe shall al be equal, together, in the great harmony of life. ----- This is how you can tell that I'm bored. Or when GC kicks me out of the chatroom. Really, at my school you're either intelligent or you're popular. I'm not popular, but I'm respected. I have the feeling this post will make no or little sense, as it was made up of random thoughts that I haven't bothered to check over.

Re: Popularity
Damn, Gerudo, I wish my teachers were like you! None of our teachers really give a flying **** about our in-school relationships. As for popularity, frankly, it aggravates me. I've got a lot of friends, but the group I hang with isn't at all popular. Instad I choose to keep to those that I trust and that I know trust me. It does piss me off sometimes though, when my friend Amanda starts calling me 'cute'... Grrrrrrrr...

Re: Popularity
Popularity is like "the thing" at my school. Everyone wants to be popular. Bah, starts from Grade 6 and moves it's way to Grade 8. There is always this big group of kids, that everyone wants to be. It's like, if you don't know a kid, it's like they hardly exist. "Is that a new kid?" Like what happened on Recess(if anyone watches it
). Gus was there for a good few months, and with glasses, he got picked on. Without them, he was the new "cool kid." Yeah, anyways, popularity doesn't have much of a meaning. Like someone said, your either intelligent, or your popular. I can greatly expand on that, but I can save it for another time. Respect out of popularity? Hmm... I don't see them getting much respect. Maybe for the fact that... Nah... I can't find that yet. Oh, and being well known is different from being popular. Because people actually KNOW you. Not just for the fact that they know your name. I'm not even sure if any of that made sense. Woo! Oh well ![]()

Re: Popularity
Gerudo: Nah, mate, I'm going on 16 in May, I'm well into high school now, and even now the teachers don't give a whit about the crap that goes on under their noses. Therefore: If by your view none of my teachers are doing their jobs, then perhaps my school shouldn't exist, lol
