dial-up sucks

ok i need some help
i really REALLY hate my stupid AOL dial-up connection and my parents don't want to get a faster connection. my bro and i have tried talking to them but they don't care. my dad rarely uses it unless he needs to get something really important from his work and my mom uses it occasionally to check e-mail and download word documents. so i need some advice or a plan to convince them.

i was thinking about getting a throttle program (i saw this at my school. they can limit the download speed on a computer and make it really slow if they want) to annoy my parents but i can't find one.

so doesanyone have any suggestions

ohh here is one, show them the customer satisfaction levels for AOL and then for Verizon DSL, for about 5$ more(assuming you are in the US) you can get DSL via verizon. I also know that Yaho has a plan where it is 20$ the first year and an unmentioned amount after that.

just bombard them w/ the truth. also tell them they can save cash by cancelling the phoneline(which means that DSL would actually save them cash most likely)


I have never had this problem though I have had a cable modem connection for the last 4 years. I love having a 4mps connection...

Tell them that AOL sucks and costs way too much money. Or you could just be like me, and download Firefox secretly.

You should ask them about Charter. A product with a commercial with Dan Akyroyd can only be good!

Tell them you can get REAL dial-up for much cheaper. Show them Netzero, Netscape or SBC Yahoo! Dial, how it's faster, be better for the computer, and how they'll save money. Prepare a report.

Research the ISP's in your area. Cable internet is pretty cheap nowadays, and DSL is getting cheaper too. AOL is $20/month. If you can find cable for $25 (which shouldn't be hard) then tell them you'll pay the extra costs or something.

AOL is still 25, get the facts right. DSL, in some cases, may be down to 25 as well, but for decent DSL, you would most likely want something other than the bare minimum. Also, another alternative, if it still exists I haven't seen it around, is ISDN, which is twice as fast as regular dial-up.

ISDN is utter crap. You havn't "seen it around" because it sucks so bad.

You can get a good price on DSL if you have it bundled with your phone bill. That's what I have.

Oh, and get your facts right too. AOL is actually $23.90. I coulda sworn it was $21.95 myself, so I just rounded it to 20 to save the time of typing 3 extra characters. Or you can be super-retarded and pay an extra $15 (AROUND THAT PRICE, zelink) a month ON TOP OF your current internet bill to get "AOL Enhanced" broadband.

Optimum Online is great and I strongly recoment that, it just maybe more of the expencive side. From my experiance, I believe that having AOL slows down your internet connection. Defenatly, try and get somethingother then that.

Optimum Online is the most wonderful internet evar. I love it, I've been using it for years and it is still one of the fastest connections. You get great speeds, and i know some people who pay the same price for Dial-Up that we pay for OptOnline Cable.

Check it out. It may be more expensive then 20 bucks... but I assure you, it's worth it. I hardly ever, perhaps 2% of the time I've been using this internet service, been disconnected. They have had problems ONCE in my area in the past five or so years.

The first six months are only $30 per month, I believe. If you are not already a cablevision customer, it gets a bit pricey after that...

Well, no matter which type of internet connection you use, you have to keep in mind who uses it the most. You and your brother. So the obvious solution would be to pay part of the fees, since you two use it the most.
Not only would this help you get a better internet connection, but it would also show your parents that you are responsible enough to actually commit to something and you'd have a good record for future tasks that you would like to participate in.

I hate dail up and my parents wont buy DSL or anything else. I can't take it every ten 10 seconds I get kick off because of people calling or just for no reason I hate it

I feel your pain. My parents also refuse to stray from AOL and its stupid dial-up. The reason? They absolutely LOVE the parental controls :mad: (they're control freaks). It also stinks that we live in the country and we cant get cable hook-up out here.

tell your parents if you get comcast high speed internet and cable, you can get money off both! not too mention comcast is the fastest frigggin thing on the internet, and your dad might be able to make some money on the side in the stock market! ya im cool! wait i suck! NOOOOO!

i hacked through the stupid parental controls so fast it wasn't funny. not really but i found ways around them. get some un-heard of internet browser, they usually get around the controls. or go to your school and download a program that spies on all the passwords people put in and use your parents accounts.

As for everyone else thanks for agreeing me with AOL sucks. i crashed 3 counter-strike servers today. as for my parents their so hard-headed about changing to something else. if anyone could tell me to get a "throttle" program i could use it to piss them off until they are forced to get something faster.

I JUST GOT DSL TONIGHT! SBC Global is a great package. I have it at my other house.

ok for everyone who has dial-up if you want to convince your parents to get something faster do this. go to netlimiter.com and download the program. then just set it so your connection goes slower than ever. piss of your parwnts for as long as the demo lasts and watch them order something faster

Moving my parents has never been a problem. I just moved my mom from msn to netscape, same service for cheaper. Now what I need to know is how much does Netscape DSL cost, and how easy is it to switch? I don't think she feels like switching to a completely different server now thats shes on netscape, but I don't think a difference should be hard. If it's 10-20 a week extra for DSL, I'd pay. I get 20 a week for lunch money, so even if I didn't make it another way, I could always use that as a last resort. I REALLY want DSL, especially since I'm tired of getting booted from 8/9 of the battle.net games I try to join (Online warcraft and starcraft.)

I have dial-up too, but we might get DSL because I might have to take an online course from Texas Tech next year. I might take the course just to get the high-speed connection. The good Lord knows we need it...

Uh, just wondering, which is faster: DSL or Cable. I've heard it depends on location, blablablah. I'd like to know how fast both download (you know, KBPS), just so I can have a say in whether we get a dsl or cable connection.
