Milk

This is an interesting question I pondered for the last two days. I'm sure everyone knows that when one buys milk, he can choose between whole, 2%, 1%, and skim (fat free) milk. Anyone can taste the difference between whole and any of the other free, but I don't think one can taste the difference between 2%, 1%, and skim milk.

If this is true for everyone, why do farms create milk with the three different amounts of fat? How can all three concentrations of fat possibly be successful individually? If one were to like 2% milk, why would he not go all the way and drink skim?

Any thoughts? Comments? Criticism on how random a question this seems? Questions on why I thought about this for two days?

Re: Milk

Well I have thought about random things as well....but to comment on your question. It could just be that some people have to watch there diet or something, I don't know.
But I really can't tell the difference between 1%and2%. But I heard that it is good to drink skim milk before a sport game or race-it digestes easier, cuz it is practically water. My track coach tought me that. Wow I can't believe I am talking about this.

Re: Milk

Ok, I used to drink whole when I was a wee-un, makes you grow faster.
Then I was on 1% for years, and then we moved in with the new housemate (now my stepfather), and we drank skim. I can tell the difference between skim and 1%, 2% and whole, and skim and whole, but not 1% to 2%.

And about the randomness, don't worry, I do that too.

Re: Milk

Dang vegan.

I can tell the difference in all of them. All you've got to do is get used to one and then try another. When I switched from 2% to 1%, I hated it. Switched back not too much later. It's just... different. Maybe I'm weird. =O.o;-

Re: Milk

No, I understand you. I was DISGUSTED by skim milk when I went down from 1%. And now I get a weird taste from 1% since I only have skim. All in all, the best option would be to get a different one each time you buy a gallon so you taste the minute differences, but never get too used to just one.

Re: Milk

Actually, I can detect the difference in taste between 2% milk and skimmed. 2% is more rich in aroma, while skimmed is very light, almost like water. So therefore, if you like the smell of milk, drink 2% or whole. Although skimmed is good for people with hypertension (high blood pressure).

And how do they make individual milk with different percentages? Computers, my friend. Computers and scientific studies and practices.

Re: Milk

Well, the fat content adds something to the taste and people have different tastes, so some will like the milk with 1%, whole's amount, etc.

I'm in England, and we don't use that system-although we do have whole and skimmed. I myself prefer semi-skimmed, it's what my family has alwys had, and I don't fancy the idea of fatty milk. >_O

Also, it doesn't really matter to me, as I don't drink milk as such-it makes me feel sick. I have to mix it with powder to turn it into a milkshake first. I even have to have dry cereal for this reason. :/

Re: Milk

I'm a soya-man, but I don't mind the taste of regular whole milk on cereal, or tea.

Re: Milk

I have never liked the taste of milk alone, so I can't tell the difference between anything- 'sept maybe skim and strait cream. (slight exageration)

But obviously some people are very serious about their milk, and demand these options. And as long as there is demand, and money, dairys will provide.

Re: Milk

We used to drink 2% milk, but then went down to 1% a while back because it's healthier. After drinking the 1% for a while, I can't see how anyone would ever want to drink the 2% stuff.

Re: Milk

1% is the best, tastes better and is a lot more smoother than 2% Unfortunatly, we are back on the 2% stuff ever since my youngest sister turned 1 and looks like I will have to put up with 2% for like...well until I move out noe >_>

Re: Milk

I can taste the difference between them. Actually, here we have 1/2% as well. Thats what we buy. Personally, I like the 2% and whole better, we just have to get 1/2% because my mom is ALWAYS dieting... I feel like I should know more about this kinda thing cuz my aunt has a dairy farm... but i really dont... ^.^;;;

Re: Milk

I used to be 2%...

My mom refused to buy it after a while and went down to 1%. It tasted different, but now I'm used to it.

All of the milks taste different to me. I'm a bit of a milk glutton so I can usually ID them from taste...

But the worst is the milk they drink in Mexico. I couldn't even touch the stuff...

Re: Milk

I generally don't care what kind of milk we get. SO long as it's not whole milk, I'll drink it.

We usually have 2%, simply because it's my dad's preference, but we get skim and 1% when they're cheaper and quite honestly, I can't tell the difference in taste, only thickness.

I don't really drink milk all that often, anyhow. Every now and then with a bowl of cereal, but that's about it.
