Internet Abbriviations

O.K, I really haven't started communicating with others on the internet until last November when I joined, and I'm not sure what many abbreviations are. Occasionally I see one in a post, and I am left in the dark. Could you write down some abbreviations and there translations for me? I mean like lol is laugh out loud and something else that I forget. It would help a lot, so thanks. I don't mean the abbriviations for Zelda games, I know all of those.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

Just a word of advice: don't use them. They generally make you look stupid outside the occasional "lol" or "rofl". But you do definitely need to know them if you want to successfully communicate with people.

First of all: www.urbandictionary.com

That site probably has most of the abbreviations you want. Just type them in the box and hit search.

IMO: In my opinion
IMHO: In my humble opinion
ROFL: Rolling on floor laughing
ROFLMAO: Rolling on floor laughing my arse off
g2g/gtg: Got to go
wb: Welcome back
wtf: What the f***
w/e: whatever
j/k: just kidding
stfu: Shut the f*** up

That's all I can think of right now.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

Gecko's got the obvious ones. There are also abbreviations such as:
  • AFK = away from keyboard
  • BRB = be right back
  • BBIAB = be back in a bit
  • TTYL = talk to you later
  • IMHO = in my humble opinion
  • WTH = what the hell(?)
Those are all I can think of. Of course, there are more, but those should keep you covered.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

Thanks a lot. I don't plan on using them, as Nighthawk said, they make you look less educated. But it will help me to understand what others have written.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

well, I have always had the opinion that lol is a widely accepted abbreviation in a normal situation, and therefore it doesn't make you look like an uneducated little child. What I mean is.. writing lol doesn't make people look stupid really since it's so common and accepted nowadays. It's the same as using a laughing smiley IMO (wops, lol (haha)).

now writing LOL in every post or its evil cousin lolololol does make you look a bit childish.. Since it's a forum and there is no real-time interaction here... it's really unneccessary to fill a post with abbreviations.

But I must say, the common abbreviations like brb, lol, lmao/rofl/roflmao are very useful and fun to use in chat. I use lol all the time on MSN for instance.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

I've used "idk" before...but not so much anymore, for I have grown out of internet abbreviations.

Here's one I love to use to my online Battle.net friends to confuse them:
HMWCAWCCIAWCCCW? = How much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

Re: Internet Abbriviations

if you did that abbriviation without thinking, you are a true geek. Yes, that's right, a true online geek...and that's not a bad thing

Re: Internet Abbriviations

If I'm chatting in AIM or something casual like that, I'll use them occasionally, but I have no respect for anybody who uses them ALL THE TIME.

Also, you'll probably come across people who speak in 1337. That's useful to know too.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

I use 'idk', Loz. I actually use a lot of abbreviations when I talk to my real-life friends online, except I don't use 'u' or 'r', those just annoy me. =/

Re: Internet Abbriviations

It is my opinion that all internet abbreviations, 'lol' included, should die. I hate them all. Even though I understand most of them, and leet.

If someone's post is not easily understood without needing to understand abbreviations, it's not worth reading.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

i'm agreeing with KK here.
i hate LoL... i've never used it... and i never will.
why not just go off and say:

ilmaoairotfwiwmpbtwtftihebathimel

or: I'm laughing my ass off and i'm roling on the floor while i wet my pants becuase that was the funniest thing i have ever been able to hear in my entire life.

it's just pointless. only a few are actually worth it. such as w00t.. that one should't leave, cause it's so cool. and n00b in the right sense is okay... like if it's actually a n00b...and not used as an insult. Like this guy here, he's never used the internet before... so thus he's a n00b and it's our job to inform him.

so.. w00t w00t.

Re: Internet Abbriviations

Yes, I'm not much of an "lol" fan anymore either. It became so cliché with me that I never really meant it when I typed it, and I started saying "L.O.L." in my speech. Usually I just settle with a "Tee hee".

TEE HEE!!!!!

Re: Internet Abbriviations

I am not a real user of abbreviations, I use things like lol and brb in chat and all but not around here or on any other forums. When it comes to people using it, I am cool with it...I don't really think that people that use them are idiots. I find they just couldn't be bothered to spend a bit of time to fine tune their words.
