The obsession with skinning

Many people skin their computers and applications for cosmetic value, what are our thoughts on this? below is an example of how this is in effect on my system. Note the non-defaultedness of IE in particular.

Re: The obsession with skinning

That isn't skinning... skinning is making them yourself, not just downloading them off the 'net (Which I'm assuming you did). It can look good if it isn't over the top and ugly. I love the current theme I'm using because it's simplistic yet looks good.. I hate skins that make everything look too cluttered and messy. This is mine atm...

Re: The obsession with skinning

technically you are skinning windows but not skinning as in the verb of creating a skin but it does not matter, technicalities.

I downloaded mine, i finally switched from having XP style for such a long time to this. I love it. It's much better, i have animations in all of my windows and cool little sounds. Though no background came with this set so i just got one from the same artist at DA.

Re: The obsession with skinning

I like my XP style. I have skinned before, but I never skin for long. It goes periodically on and off when I skin. If you are using windowblinds, I highly reccomend the skin LightBlue. It's nice and neat, and looks good, too.

Halz, I used that skin once.

Eijiro, did you make that skin yourself? It's not bad, and I am also a fan of making your own skins. I made one for a program... a DDR simulatory, Stepmania. Actually, I am finishing up that skin... since the beta versions got quite popular o-o. I was surprised, too, it was like some people had never seen a high quality graphic before. The community freaked out.

Re: The obsession with skinning

I used to be obsessed with skining my PC, I got it looking like KDE, Panther and skyos. I'd take screens of them as soon as my PC works again...
Lately I have gone of scinning and just switched to the old 9x theme....

It looks cool, but Im more into the opposite. I like to strip down all my programs and op systems for the sheer speed.

I pretty much keep everything sorta simple, just so it's easy to look at. I have my clean Firefox skin, iTunes looks nice, and everything's easy to navagate. Zelink, if I had your skin, I'd probably puke.

I remember having the Mac OS X style skin for awhile though. Complete. It had everything, even the little dock. The performance just kinda went down the toilet. That's really the only skin I'd like to have, if my PC could handle it.

Re: The obsession with skinning

I must say that I am a fan of having default skins for everything!

...Seriously, though. I don't see the point. It gets the job done as it is... why bother changing it?

now that I think about it, I would like to have my task bar up at the top. I remember doing this to good old windows '98 quite easily but cannot recall how it is done on XP.

EDIT:nvm, i just changed it to defualt clasix windows and moved it as I had before, thanks anyway, I have it done now

EDIT 2:tsukasa, thats what I ultimately had to do, but I had to rever to the original windows 9x theme first...

Click and drag it to the top. =P

I don't skin. I have mine set to default '98 style (save for color changes) because I don't like the look of XP.

Re: The obsession with skinning

I like default best, for some reason. The nice blue window boxes and taskbar with the shiny green "Start" button..." oh my... eye-gasm.

Skinning takes up space, and it doesn't really add anything other than some visuals. But who cares about visuals, really? Less is more, in my opinion.

Oh, and I also like my nice, pre-provided island theme for my desktop. You know the one. ;p

Me. I think most of the people that dislike custom themes are people who's computers can't handle it

Re: The obsession with skinning

I don't have custom themes. (I don't take the time to find or make them, I know Im lazy) But I do have custom wallpapers...heh. I just like to keep everything plain and simple, and if I can get my hands on some custom stuff, then its something optional I'll use.

*laughs*
Blah, I am so .. stupid.
I raised my eyebrows when I saw the title and sidestepped it carefully thinking that some people were obsessed with skinning animals XD and thats what the thread was about ...
Maybe I shouldn't have revealed that.
erm..
ok.. back on topic.
I .. uhm, use the default windows xp window-type thingies >.>
*scurries out of topic*

Perhaps you needed to Unlock the Taskbar? I don't know.

Anyway, another vote for "Default". Works for me.
