Are home phones becoming obsolete?

Kind of random but I just realized how few home phones I see in people's houses in this day and age. It seems almost everyone has their own personal cellphone and that home phones are becoming a thing of the past. What do you guys think?

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

Funny, I grew up with a home phone and if it ever got cut because of an unpaid bill, it was like the WORST THING EVER. Back home, cellphones didn't become "a thing" until I was in highschool, so everything previous to that was all home phones. Now, I rely mostly on the internet for communicating and reaching people, own a cellphone and don't have a home phone. Dunno what the stats are like in general for home phones, but I can say for sure it's something that was essential for me in the past, but now I had forgotten it existed until I read this thread.

No, you need a landline in order to get the internet. As long as the internet is a thing, so will landline telephones. Plus, many mobile phone providers here require a landline number in order to get a contract mobile phone.

We got rid of our landline a few years back. The only people who called us on it were telemarketers and ♥♥♥♥. Cell phones are taking over.

Nyet. This is the age of fiber optics, my young friend. Land lines were used for dial up only. And maybe DSL. Not sure. But most interwebz connections are like, fiber optic/cable now. Or wi-fi.

Sadly, cell phones are taking over. We still have land lines. A house phone and several lines for the office. We still use fax machines so yeah... I personally prefer land lines because im old fashioned. Plus cell phones have ♥♥♥♥ass reception in my neighborhood. Its a notorious dead zone. It may have something to do with the fact my neighborhood is more or less a gulch. LOL!

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

We still have a land line at my parent's house because my whole dad's side of my family lives in Turkey (and we live in the US), and lolz we cannot call them on cell phones. We are using Skype and Facebook a lot now to talk to them, but there are still a lot of older family members that don't regularly or, like, ever use those things, so the land line is rather essential for now. For Skype, we usually call first then say "let's skype!" haha.

Also, my mom gets some work calls I think, and has a fax machine and stuff.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

If it weren't for spotty service in some places, I would not see a reason to have a land line.
It's almost cheaper to go with a family plan and get everyone their own phones then a land line.

And if you're on your own, then it's definitely a better way to go, in my opinion.
Internet and Cell.
You almost don't even need cable or satellite anymore what with things like boxee and just having the internet in general.

Any ISP I've ever dealt with has required a land line for their internet, including their fibre optic services. Again as well, any mobile phone I've had has also required me to provide a land line number before I was allowed to sign the contract. I can't imagine that Northern Ireland would be much different to England, given it's the same companies providing in both. Could have also changed since I last changed providers, it's been two or three years since I changed either.

US: 1 England: 0.

Whenever I sign contracts, I just put my cell phone number and scratch out home number. Never stopped anybody from wanting my money.

Are you sure that's the case? Maybe they're really just trying to get you to purchase phone service. I don't know why England would be that way when the rest of the world isn't!

We have cable TV and internet, but no home phone in our household.

I thought about getting a home phone, but it seems kinda pointless.

Until cell phone service gets better land lines will be required where I live. I get no bars of signal from my cell phone while I'm in the house or out in the yard. I have to drive a couple miles towards town until I get signal that won't be choppy.

Yay for the Piedmont area of NC?

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

I still call the home phone from school
I think we still have a landline Internet connection too, and the reception and stuff is better on a landline anyway, and it's harder to lose, so all round more reliable

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

My family live on top of a mountain in NC, without a signal boost our cell phones would be useless. Most families in the area still use landlines because it is just easier for them. I think my family will always have a landline. Heck, our phone is a rotary one, and those are just too cool to give up.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

-browsing zu on a cool mobile atm-

The only reason why we still use landline phone is that older generation people call us on that. While they can be more reliable indeed, I think it is worth more to improve cell phones in this case. I see hardly any need to stick with the home phones.

... I am a bit similar (and hostile) when it comes to TVs too - to me they hardly have a point as I use the internet instead. But I digress.

Cells are kewl.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

my house don't even have a landline anymore. We all use cells anyway, so why pay for landline service?

and on that train of thought, we don't pay for television service either, we just have our living room TV hooked up the the internet and stream Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

I only have a home phone and no cell phone. The cell phone service is fine in Montreal, but I refuse to get one simply because I don't want people to be able to reach me wherever I am, nor do I believe that I should be expected to speak to people and be at their beck and call whenever its convenient for them. ♥♥♥♥ them, I'll talk when its convenient for me, leave a message. Same reason I don't own a laptop.

If home phones at some point go into disuse I'll simply use skype to call, but once again only when I'm at home.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

I'm in the US and we have to pay for landline service, else we lose our internet (a little surprised that ISPs in the UK are allowed to do that).

If I had my way, I'd drop the phone service and go with magic jack.

Piedmont/foothills area does suck unless you have Verizon. The internet options are also ♥♥♥♥ in some areas but great in others.

Re: Are home phones becoming obsolete?

I still use a landline. Works better for longer conversations and international calls. Most phone calls sound clearer, it works in my basement and I don't think calls can be dropped on a landline.

I love my home phone ye
