Lonesome George has died

Lonesome George was the last known Pinta Island tortoise. He was believed to be at least 100 years old. He was the rarest creature on earth.

That sucks and that sucks hard. I hope that there is quite possibly some more undiscovered Pinta Island tortoises.

Re: Lonesome George has died

Have seen it in the news today. Quite sad, really, considering he was the last one of his kind. The pictures and videos shown on TV made me go all :'l

Boy, was he a huge turtle.

Re: Lonesome George has died

wow. I could care less about all the other news and such, I read all about this guy since I was little and I am crushed that he is gone. unless there are others as yet undiscovered, the pinta island tortoise is extinct, though technically even with George alive the race was doomed. It feels so strange to hear about the extinction of a species as it happens, versus in a textbook.

Is it bad that I was more upset about the death of this tortoise than about Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston and pretty much any other celebrity who died recently?

I mean, there's a whole species gone now...think what it will be like when the last tiger dies if poaching doesn't stop? It makes you think, doesn't it?

RIP, George, who (probably) isn't lonesome any more :')

We at least have DNA samples so we can clone him in the future, right?

@Intrigue, I thought MJ was his own distinct species? :p

Re: Lonesome George has died

this was literally the saddest thing i read all yesterday and probably one of the saddest things i've seen all year. I know important people have died and stuff but man, this is a whole (sub)species of animal and it totally breaks my heart.

I know they tried a ton to get him to mate with other subspecies but he either didn't, or the eggs were infertile.

I think they have blood and sperm samples from him but I can't be certain.

george :c

Re: Lonesome George has died

That must have been a pretty lonely life, poor guy spending a long portion of his life with none of his own kind. Its a sad day, but on the other hand living life as a relic of the past can't be too joyful.

or, since the other subspecies are so closely related, they could selectively breed them..... usually Im against cloning a full fledged organism, but in the case of stopping an extinction of a species endemic to a tiny island, I think its pretty well justified. I honestly think this hits me harder than the death of any other famous person, human or animal.

Poor tortoise. Unfortunately... that's what happens with species though.

He lived a full life! <3
