*** kissing newbies

Nothing against them personally, but has anyone ever noticed newbies kiss ***?

They praise the admins and mods like they expect to get promoted or something. This isn't just ZU I'm talking about but almost all forums have ass kissing newbs. I can understand the, '..great communty. I like it here..' posts.

But it gets ridiculous in those 'ZU friends thread's'. They are almost always started by newbies. They always put the admins on top and mods too, even if they haven't been here long enough to know their personall style.

Well, my quarter-rant is over. Talk or lock whatever you wish, just keep in mind this wasn't ment as a flame, but an observation.

Re: *** kissing newbies

Don't ever remember being like that. The rare times I'd ask a mod for help and get help, of course I'd thank them, but that's about it.

A lot of the newbs here though... wow. I've noticed what you're talking about DoD, it does get pretty rediculous.

Re: *** kissing newbies

I don't kiss anybody's ***. I come, I post, I do my best to obey the rules. Some mods I like, some I don't, that's a personality conflict though I'm not going to let that interfere with the peace and well being of the forums.

Some kids do it, but it isn't limited to people who are new to the forums...

Re: *** kissing newbies

I just come here to make discussion, I don't want to kiss ***. If I ever have, I can honestly tell you I didn't intentionally do it. What I don't like is newbs who think they know everything when they know nothing.

Re: *** kissing newbies

i have never kissed ass to the mods... o-o oh, wait a minute.

When I joined in October, I was a newb for a month. In November I became staff, and helped do the mailbag. I didn't kiss ass for it, i sent an application, and became it. With my prior experience around ZU, I "asked" to become a mod...

meh. I noticed it kinda last night. In the chat. Not naming names

edit: Now that I think about, it's usually the mods that talk to the newbs in the newb forum. They guide them around, they help them when they need it, and they usually are the ones that get the PMs for help.

That's why they "Ass-kiss." It's because the mods are the people who stick out when newbs start here. Like Lioness and Sea, the two main helpful people here, are usually at the top of the list. That's why.

Re: *** kissing newbies

Ass-kissing is just a part of our society of suck-ups.

So it's nothing too extreme or insane, because, hey, we all did some kind of ass-kissing one time in our lives.

Re: *** kissing newbies

Another observation: Newbs start way too many threads.

I don't understand it! I made I rule that I would not start a thread until I had a great idea, and until I knew I was going to stay here. To me, it just seems strange to come to a site and start posting tons of threads. Especially if you don't know what threads have been around, and you end up creating a thread that was there in the past, maybe still around. (I still remember my first thread: What island on Wind Waker would you live on? I did well, and I was proud, and the people posted nice things, so I stayed here. ^^)

I don't really consider myself a Newbie anymore. I have been here about 7 months... more than half a year. I never really sucked up, I think I went largely unnoticed for most of my Newbie days. Actually... I don't know if I'm even really noticed now... I didn't know the mods, and some mod/admin people I really liked at the start it turned out I don't like now. And some people I didn't like at the start I like now (Sear, for example). Oh well...

case in point: When my supervisor came to my work on tuesday, i didn't suck up that much, therefore, got *****ed at because of it.

It's a natural order of things. In order to move ahead, you need to suck up as much as possible.

Re: *** kissing newbies

Heh, I remember when I was a newb, scratch that, n00b.....

I wasn't an ass-kisser, even though I did PM sear a couple of times for help. I thought he was an awsome guy and to this day still do, but there are others that I like here who aren't even mods or admns.

Re: *** kissing newbies

I'm just trying to rationalize everything said in this thread,
and this is what I think about them praising the mods as thier friends...

In some cases.. the Mods are actually the warmest people to the newbs, as proven in here. Most people are all "KILL THE NOOB!" and the such..
but the mods are here to moderate and, in some cases, make the newbies feel welcome. That's why we have the adoption center.

I'm not saying there aren't too many stupid threads started by n00bs.. there are. But the majority of the time, they know no better. (Unless your one certain N00B in particular who continues, to this day, to make thread after thread... I think we all know who I'm speaking of here).
I'm just touching base on the fact that mods are helpful. More helpful than the *average* ZU member.

I remember when I was a n00b, the first person who I actually had a decent conversation with was Mercutio... (I think he was a mod.. at that point. I dunno, I forget..) but we had a good chat about Clamp and how great the artwork is.... from then on, I did, in fact consider him a "friend" of sorts, although I didn't know him all that well.

SO... That's my rant. Don't be so hard on the newbies. Sure they may kiss ass, but probably not intentionally?

You have to also take into consideration the age of some of those that join. When you're dealing with younger forum members you have to remember that there is a drastic learning curve when it comes to forums, especially one such as this. Threads get locked quite quickly around these parts compared to numerous other threads I go to. I notice that it happens a lot on Zelda related sites, so there could be a connection. That being said, many kids who join forums are new to it, and may not see or read the rules. I joined my first forum when I was 21 and I didn't even know how to register at the time.

Patience is really the key. New members are the lifeblood of internet forums, and without them eventually a forum dies. You have to make sure they understand the rules in a manner that doesn't turn them off from the community. We have our fair share of jerk faces around here, but the nice peeps heavily outnumber the brash.
