What Is The Cause of This?

Well, this is a really honest question. I wonder what makes people not want to post in a thread. It sounds like a really simple question, but when you get down to it, it isn't. I thought of the idea for this thread when I've noticed when I had made threads when I started out, I had 2 threads with 0 replies, yet over 100 views. I found that odd. So, what exactly is the cause of this? I would love to hear your theories, and any sort of reply would be appreciated.

Don't take this personal, but lack of interest is probably one of many reasons.

You have to open a thread to see what it's about. Once it's opened, it's registered as a view, but the person was probably like "Oh...ok...nevermind."

Or sometimes people may not know how to respond. I've ran into that problem before.

I personally quit looking at threads after they've reached so many pages long because at that point I don't care to read light years of posts, and then add my response to it at the very end after several others have probably already said what was on my mind to begin with. I hate when that happens.

I'm not in the least offended of any sort. That's the main reason anyone doesn't post in a certain thread.

Depends on the topic. Like, sometimes there will be topics that you've seen time and time again, and even if it is relevant to me (for example, "online relationships" pops up like two or three times a year, and I met my partner online, but I've spoken about it so much over the years that I've gotten to a point where I'm like eeeeh-not-this-again when I see it).

Sometimes it's just because the topic isn't something I'm particularly interested in, simple as that.

Also, what DoranB said about lengthy topics and/or someone already stating my opinion. Like he did, and like how I'm basically saying "this" right now lol.

I usually go to threads and read what other's have to say, and when I do open threads, to see what the OP has to say.

I never really know what to write in a few threads, I really don't have an answer

Usually I'm just nosy and reading is all I want to do. Sometimes I think about the topic for a while as I decide what to post if I'm interested in it, but more often than not I end up forgetting about it completely and do other things instead. /lazy

Yeah, definitely if this thread was active, however I am referring to a thread having little to no replies and having a lot of Views, though.

Well, if the thread has a lot of views and no replies, people could get curious as to why there's so few posts in the first place. I wouldn't say there's so much a lack of interest unless the thread is an absolute snore to read, but perhaps people aren't too sure what to write or are waiting for somebody else to start the thread rolling. Forum awkwardity and all that.

I naturally prefer observing to participating for some reason. I'm fine being that quiet weirdo giggling in the background. Its just fun for me to read all of the threads but I dont post much because its just...I dunno, not as fun as reading theough things and moving on.

Hey, I know what it feels like to start a thread, thinking it's going to be just the greatest thing ever, only to watch it slowly slide towards the bottom of the page. Needless to say, I'm trying to cut back on my thread creations.

An easy way to have a thread do that is for it to be about something too specific because if I won't reply if I don't know what the topic is about and often large opening posts are intimidating as well.

A lot of times, I'll see a thread and want to contribute something, but I let my social anxiety take over. I'll get nervous that I'll say something wrong and everyone will point it out, or that I'll try to be funny and it just completely backfires.

I've gotten better, though.

Don't sweat it! It's just a message board! Besides, people do silly stuff all the time!

I generally don't post if I'm tired like I am right now or I simply am not interested in the topic whether the OP is long or it's just a topic that I can't contribute to. There's only a few threads I've replied to that had OP's that were incredibly long.

A few things.

I may have already spoken about that topic before.
I may simply not be interested in it.
There aren't any pictures of hot women in it.
What I have to say, may have already been said.
I am more interested in what others have to say.
I can't talk about my self in it.
The general attitude of the people in the thread is nasty.
It is about something where my opinion is unnecessary and perhaps rude to contribute.
Xeno posted something funny and whatever joke I come up with is just second class.

If the thread requires a lengthy post and I can't be bothered.

If the topic is stupid.

If I won't fit into a discussion that has already started.

If it is serious and I don't know about the topic.

If the thread is generic and dry.

If the thread won't allow minimal joking around...

"Is this a discussion/conversation I feel like I can become invested in and actually get something out of?"

99% of the time the answer is 'no.'



Sometimes I post anyway.

If I don't find something interesting enough for me to post in, then I don't post in it. Simple enough.
