getting to know everyone
i've noticed that these boards are full of people from all over the world. i would like to know about what makes say, sweden different from my country australia.
allow me to begin; australia has been nicknamed 'the lucky country' not because of the good weather or friendly people, but because anyone planning on bombing our country has to take a pit stop half way to refuel. we do NOT all talk like steve irwin and unfortunately, are the worst country for nintendo fans and therefore, arent privvy to the limited interest games such as FSA (if any aussies read this and know of an Oz release date for FSA, let me know yeah?). i live in melbourne, which is the worlds most liveable city. one thing i find interesting is that even though its america thats having an election for a new president, we still are interested as a nation enough to have major campaign updates on the news. we get a lot of international news. i've heard america doesnt get much international news. is this true? also, what stereotypes/rumours about australia have you heard and want to put to rest. just to make it clear, not many people (if any) have kangaroos in their backyard, i know i cant see a kangaroo unless i take an hour drive. if this thread is in the wrong spot or whateva, move/delete it. |

Ahh yes, I'm an australian too and it's very annoying when everyone thinks that you 'G'day mate' And wrestle crocodiles.
Of course, sometimes it's fun to tell gullible americans about my pet kangaroo... Some people believe anything. And there's 'All australia is a desert.' If there's nothing but desert, why do we have rainforests and many tropical areas. I don't know if any other countries have problems like that, but you should share it here ![]() P.S I'm an Adelaide boy. South Australians soo rule Victorians...

Re: getting to know everyone
I'm from Norway. Now, I'm sitting in the capital writing on the only comp in the country. many people are with me standing in line, and anyways, with all the polar bears running in the streets, it way to dangerous there. We also haven't anything other to do in the spare time as tv is illegal. but I got to get back to the farm and cow the cows good and whatnot.
Enough with that. Norway is a long country, though small, has a big coast line, much oil and much mountain. Though most of the oil moeny isn't used, so it hasn't influenced us as much as one'd think. Some organisation has mesured Norway to be the best country to live in, though I suspect that is mostly mesured in money. We do have quite some mountain and forest. And when we're on the subject of animals, the closest thing I've been to a moose is the skin of one, and polar bears are only in the north. |

Re: getting to know everyone
Hmm.. Yesh, the polar bears are evil. Around all the time, I'm scared of going to school sometimes >_> Especially in the winter, when it get so cold it's dangerous to go outside. The polar bears get very hungry at winter =P
Anyway, Norway here. Hmm.. It's a very nice country IMO. One of the few countries with fjords. We also have mountains and forests, and in short, the nature is wonderful. And HAB, I saw a moose a week ago. When we were at the bus to school. Guess you were asleep or something ![]()

Re: getting to know everyone
I think I mixed up polar bear with the average ordinary bear... But oh well, correct me if I am wrong. Polar bear hybernate (sp?) in the winter and during spring, summer, and fall, they eat as much as they can to store some fat in their bodies to get through winter while they sleep.
I live in B.C, Vancouver. It was once a nice place to live in, but ever since nearly people from all over the world immigrated to this place, the quality of the environment got worsen significantly. Crime rates are also getting worse as well. And damn, there are too many cars on the streets. Ten years ago, there were hardly any traffic, now, it feels like one of those asian cities where traffic jam is a must. Arrrgh!

Re: getting to know everyone
I was actually just speaking to some tool on Yahoo who belived Australia was all deserts, kangaroos and cork-hats. I think he said something like.
Quote:
Anyway, I'm off to walk my kangaroo to the shop to buy some blue singlets, pluggers, stubbies, flanel shirts and I might have my mullet cut too. It's a fair walk, about 3 mile or so through the desert. ...Fair Dinkum. |

Re: getting to know everyone
I live in Kentucky (state), USA.
Kentucky is ridiculed with such name calling as 'hicks', and 'rednecks', when in truth they live down south. Up in the northern part of Kentucky, it's much more civilized, since it's really close to Cincinnati, so I could basically classify myself as a city guy. Yeah.

Re: getting to know everyone
I live in Washington State, US. Some people who don't live here think that it always rains, that many of us are obsessed with nature and coffee, since there really is a Starbucks on every corner, and no one knows about anywhere other then Seattle and Mt. St. Helens, and that those who have heard of Vancouver think that it's a Canadian place, when it's actually a pretty big city on the edge of the Columbian River.
Right now, we've been having some really good weather, and it's almost October, and right now last year I think it was getting really cold, but right now it's still sunny out.... , but yeah, Washington State is a pretty cool place to live, not so much for tourism, and Washington State History sucks, since it's got to be the most boring place historywise anywhere. ![]()

Re: getting to know everyone
I live in Connecticut (state) USA. I am in the no fun state, in the 1970's a law called the blue-collar law was passed wich pretty much revoked anything that's fun to do. That law has since been abolished.....but it's still no fun.

Re: getting to know everyone
I'm in Ireland and get annoyed with this "shilaelae" stuff.
A lot of people think that every Irish person is like "tis ya know boyo" well we're actually not. Hardly anybody has Red hair or wears green, and that stupid accent only appears in the Western parts of Ireland places in the East like Dublin our capital, has so many different kinds of people. We have @holes, we call 'em nackers. They're like "f off, startin' are ya, righ (for right)" they speak so fast. I don't like it here because the head of our Government (not president) is an idiot. I hate when people go on about lepracauns and what the heck is a shilaelae! Anyway, I'm gonna talk about our neighbours in the UK, people don't think there tea sippers anymore but that they can't speak their own language, like people do British impressions like "I've got an Idear, lets go to peopoo, I 'ate you so much" stuff like that.

Yesh, I'm an animal freak. -_- I live in America. Woo hoo. Great place, yeah. About stereo types, most Americans don't have them about countries like Norway, at least not where I am. I don't think many people here care about Norway, to tell the truth >_<. We do basically all believe Australia is covered in Kangaroos and desert, save a few trees filled with sleeping koala bears that you can pluck out of the trees and hug to death. And that you all say "G'day mate" whenever you see someone. I don't believe that, of course. I don't know about many stereo types about Germany, expect it the name of the country still makes people think of Nazis and Hitler. And everyone hates France. Jk. ...Sort of. We're past the "Freedom fries" stage at least. |
