St Nikolaus was a bishop from Myra -Turkey- He was named the patron saint of children. He's accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, Krampus, or Schwarzer Peter, depending on where you are throughout Germany and Switzerland. Same guy different names. He also has three modes of transport: a ship, a horse, and eight flying blue goats -the source of our reindeer. Just west of Germany, in countries like Belgium, he's called Sinter Claus, which eventually became Santa Claus. Kristkind became Chris Kringle, Sankt Nikolaus became
St. Nick, and so on and so forth. Santa Claus and his myriad of names are really a combination of a lotta traditions. Quite a few we just so happen to have covered in my German class.
