Considering joining "Genshiken"...should I?

I've been pondering joining my school's Genshiken club. Genshiken is the study of modern visual culture and media.

In other words, it's an Anime club.

I'm not exactly obsessed with Anime, but I do have an avid appreciation for the style and for Japanese stuff, just enough that I could be considered a "part-time" Otaku.

But, hey, I don't usually get a chance to hang out with large groups of people doing stuff together like this, so it seems like a good idea. I've got two friends who are already active members, so it wouldn't be too hard fitting in. Could be a welcome boost for my social life...

Plus, there are some cute girls in the club who love to cosplay. There was this one girl was dressed in this cute maid-ish outfit on Halloween...I might try talking to her sometime...At least I know we'd have something in common.

I dunno, though, I'm already part of the Game Art & Design club and I pretty much never attend the meetings, even though I really should...It'd be a lot more helpful for my education if I just stayed with that...

Or I could try to do both...even though I'm already quite busy...

Any suggestions?

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention I already hung out with them on Halloween. Was a lot better then going to a costume contest which was actually the day before. Took a small handful of pictures while I was at it. The Maid-girl isn't in the shot, though...My friends are the guy with his back to the camera in the brown jacket and the guy with glasses to the far right in the pirate-y looking outfit. The club president is the girl in the red hat.

A lot of our members are actually asian, heh.

I know it always irritated me that none of my old schools had one of these, college neither. I'd join in a heart beat honestly.

It sounds like you want to. Why would you bother asking?

Ryu, if it interests you, you should do it. Simple as that.

Do it if you're actually interested in learning about the culture and art style. Don't do it if you think you'll end up following most kids who join anime clubs and try to be Asian.

Hot Asian girls and animus. Sounds pretty awesome, bromingo.

Though it seems like the kind of club my club would have beaten up in high school, and my club was scholastic bowl.

While there are some idiots who run around screaming Japanese words randomly, I hardly think anyone actually tries to become Asian. Making such general assumption about people who join Culture clubs is rather judgmental, prejudiced and closed minded. Just pointing that out.

Thrown in some nice light skinned black girls or some dark chocolate black laides and that's my wet dream right there.

Me personally, I heard bad things about anime clubs so I can't really tell you for real. Sorry.

Touchy, aren't we? I'm just pointing out that most people who join anime clubs try to be Asian. Denying that is laughable.

But yes, Ryu-Gi, go ahead and do it if you're comfortable with it. Clubs are a great way to make friends and give a jump start to your social life. Plus, hot chicks in maid outfits? Ooooh yes. Beware, though, you're sure to see one or two chubby chicks squeezed into one of those, and it won't be pretty.

Hopefully the club will have a cuisine exchange like some of them do. Those are great way to learn to make new, unique dishes and try things you've never had before. :>

If you're interested, then join.
It's not too hard to make that decision. Plus, it is an excellant way to make friends.

The anime club that's at my school seems to be swarmed with shonen-ai fangirls..

Do it if it interests you as others have stated, but if it's just a bunch of people who are trying to be Japanese, probably not the best of ideas.

That's exactly what the Anime Club at my uni is like. My friend and I joke about it all the time. We'll see them and I'm like "Hey man, why dint you join the anime club" and he's like "what the ****, no way." I hope they all die.

I want to punch people I see that act like that at anime conventions. Thankfully most of the people in my area have at least half a brain. What's even better is that a good deal of the asians I have talked to hate people like that.

I got a couple of friends that are in my school's anime club. They just sit in a small theatre room for an entire lunch break watching anime on a projector screen. They do this about once a week.

As long as they aren't weaboo bastards, go ahead. Like Zeruda said, as long as they actually appreciate the culture and not "zomg anime is leik, awesome and totally all about japan, kawaiii desu!! ^_^", then you're set

I know a few rather odd people who are in an "anime" club, but it may be different there, so try it out a few times, if you don't like it, stop.

There seems to be no harm in joining! If it interests you, and you think you'll be an active member, I don't see why not. If you lose interest, or it turns out to be something entirely different, you can always leave the group.

There aren't any cool clubs like that at my school, consider yourself very fortunate!
