Lack of Locations in Wind Waker?

I like most of Wind Waker. I think it has good dungeons, music, and the sailing worked well.

However I think there were a lack of non-dungeon places to go on the great sea. The only large islands were Outset, which was fine, Windfall, which was a great city, Dragon Roost, which was good, and Forest Haven, which was not that great.

Most of the other things in the sea, such as the platforms and the reefs were not big enough to explore and kind of repetitive. Also the only ice area there was, was a teeny space inside one area.

It just felt like we got a huge world with hardly anything in it. Exploration has always been a part of Zelda and although this game is great, it just felt that there wasn't enough exploring of diverse areas, as most of the time you were just on the sea.

I really want to like this game more, but I can't get over the fact that there really isn't much in the game, and what there is, isn't very diverse.

agreed. it brings to mind an article i can't remember if it was Behind the Rupees or a bombers article talking about what was lacking in the Great Sea. there was a lot to explore however it to longer to get there than to explore it. i'm Phantom hourglass fixed this problem

Yeah, the only complaint I have about the overworld, is that most of the islands didn't have much in them. I do wish they were all big, with several things to do and many things to see. Even if all of the islands were as big as Dragon Roost, there still would have been a lot of sea to sail in.

Phantome Hourglass attempted to keep us from being bored by putting in more enemies, and made the overworld smaller. So as far as sailing goes, you can pick PH or TWW.

I prefer TWW personally in terms of sailing.

I agree, there could have been bigger islands, but I thought there was plenty of stuff to do. Most of the land Zelda games are just wasted space. In OoT or TP you could cut out like 50% of the land in the game and there would be no significant changes to the gameplay or anything good missing.

I agree that some of the Islands didn't have much in them. But, Do not forget all the submarines, and platforms! Howewer, I liked the game, even though the Islands overall didn't give their best. I liked the feeling of being out at the ocean.

I do not agree with that that was "wasted space". I liked that it were big areas. Even though every corner didn't hold an adventure, it looked cooler and more "realistic" and fantastic with great areas. If I have understand you right... I'm not the best at english...
But, of course I respect you for thinking the way you do. People think different!

This is one of the main reasons I didn't like WWs overworld. It was 10 times the size of OOTs but only had 1/4th the stuff in it (much like the new super walmart that replace our old one last year). Most of the island were only there so you could get a heartpiece or two. There was also only about 70 NPCs in the whole game compared to TP which has at least 400. The islands were all reletivly the same. Also, they had no music. They could have at least assigned one track to all the nonunique islands. Anything is beter than silence.

However, TWW had alot more sidequests than TP ever had. TP was all story, and no exploration. If you didn't feel like completing the main quest, then you were stuck with nothing to do. At least TWW had neat sidequests such as the pictobox one. I also think that TWW had more memorable characters. In TP's Hyrule castle town, there were only like, 5 useful NPC's, compared to almost every NPC being useful in TWW's Windfall island.

I really liked Wind Waker because of its vastness. I really didn't care for the sidequests because I'm not into that type of thing. But some of the places were barren. But some of them were beautiful. I just liked to sail to an island and stand there among the scenery. Some of the really beautiful places were the Private Oasis, Overlook Island, Mother And Child Isles, etc. But there were barren ones like the reefs.

I haven't played WW in a while so that could be argued against, but I'm inclined to disagree. I thought WW was perhaps one of the only Zeldas that suceeded in capturing the "world" feeling that you were actually somewhere big and full of life. My memory is being jogged upon writing this but I can still argue that WW was much better and the towns actually felt alive, unlike TP for example (mostly stating Kakariko Village which I really was dissapointed in).

Totally agree.
Wind Waker could of been awesome if there was just a bit more land to explore.
But it's also something which disappointed me in TP, all the towns are dead once you've got to the end...And there's nothing else to do or see.

Which sucks.

I thought the exact same thing until I replayed WW recently. The towns probably are better in WW, I agree with that. However, I realized when replaying it, that the world may be big, but it is in no way full of life. When you look at the map, there are only a few small villages, with the rest of the sea being taken up by multiple reefs and watchtowers. I found that those things were mostly filler, and I was pretty disappointed that none of them even had their own music.

Nintendo could have gone above and beyond with this game, but instead, chose to release a sub-par, content-lacking Zelda title under the cover of the cel-shading graphics engine.

We all got distracted by the graphics, and that's why everyone says that, "WW with TP graphics would have been boring." That is totally true, as when you examine the game, you find many repetitive filler locations with a few towns sprinkled through.

^ I tottally agree with you. I liked how the sea replaced Hyrule feild, but like it was said from the start, most of the islands were repetitive. I mean, there were 6 reefs!!

It would have been nice to have a couple more dungeons and at least one more big island like Windfall (maybe the two islands could have a had rivalry between their beliefs or something...). I think it would have made Wind Waker much better.

The problem was Outset, Windfall and Dragon Roost were the three main islands with people on them, and they were all fairly close to one another. This left a huge empty gap of space.

although there was an island, or reef, or fortress etc. for every quadrant on the map...

they were small and tiny, and had no where to explore.

That's why the next Zelda should have sailing on a big sail boat, but have land masses that you can sail too...sizes of Hyrule and Termina

It's not a lack of locations...it's a lack of large landmasses. I actually enjoyed the whole island thing, but that's just me.

I guess your right.

The "exploring" wasn't just exploring whats on the island, but actually exploring and finding the islands.

I really enjoyed The Wind Waker's map. All tho most islands were small, it was still really fun exploring the sea and the little islands to see whats on them. And the big gap between islands didn't bother me, it made it more lifelike.

i miss wind waker, i need to buy it for my wii again.
though, i do agree if there were one or two more towns like windfall,
it would have been amazing.
the only other two really as mentioned are DR and outset
but even those aren't anything amazing, pretty bare.

I do like this idea.

Nintendo, please make a Wii sequel to TWW, featuring a map with half small islands and stuff like in TWW, but also put in some decent sized landmasses (not too big like Hyrule or Termina....maybe like 20% of the size or so, and have 3 or 4 in the game)

Fishing, bug collecting, searching for heart pieces, ghost hunting the Hero of discount store quest, and each new sword skill was a side quest. There was also the quest to throw a huge thing of hot spring water on that gorron by the east gate bridge. You also have to travel back to areas to get things you couldn't get to before because you lacked the proper item or skill. Then lets not for get the Cave of Ordeals, that was one of the toughest places in Zelda history. The Ghost hunters quest is pretty good because most of the ghost are hard to find do to only being able to find them at night and some you had to find places to dig to find them. The only thing that was missing from TP was the lack of NPCs that talk but don't have anything relevant to say. Personaly I'm glad there aren't a lot of pointless chatter to waste my time. I also loved how they reintivated the gossip stones in TP. Much better than saying what time it is and giving you little quotes. WindWaker was fun but I spent a lot of time sailing from place to place instead of warping just so I could have something to do. If WindWaker might have more quests than TP, but I don't really think it did. The story of WW was fun but the ending was crap. It made it seem like that's how the story of Hyrule ends and I hate to think that Hyrule is to be completly flooded and forgotten.

Also, I thought OoT was a masterpiece. I loved how you went through time to two time periods. I know alot of TP fans will say, "no man, you could go in da twilight realm". The Twilight realm was garbage. There was nothing to do AT ALL in the Twilight realm except for killing insects.
You seem to bash TP every chance you get. I don't understand why your so stuck on hating it. Yeah the awe of OoT when it 1st came about was really something. OoT had a fun story but I liked the story in TP just a little more. TP gives you better weapons and skills, and the over all look of TP was by far better than OoT. However there is a huge difference in the consoles abilities. A little disadvanage for OoT, but OoT makes up for it in overall game worth. Navi or Midna? Midna is way better than Navi. Midna is actually useful where as Navi was just an annoince. Even the 1st time I played OoT I couldn't stand Navi. I will say one of my favorite times in any Zelda game was in the Gurudo desert in OoT. I really like your sig btw. Actually I almost want to start a new file just because of your sig. lol. But anyway OoT had a lot going for it for NPCs. You could use the masks to get them to say different things, but after the 1st time playing it I stoped doing that because it's just a waste of time. I started only going to who I need to and yeah that is pretty much what TP does from the go so I don't mind it at all. The boses could have been a little harder in TP. That's the only down side for me, but I just like to think there not easy Link is just that hardcore. lol. In the other thread someone said to move on from OoT. I disagree. They are really both great games. As for Me OoT ranks a very close 2nd to TP, and I'm looking forward to the next best hit. I don't ever think they'll be able to top Midna though.

I believe a lot of people through out Hyrule were killed when the curtain of twilight covered the land. They made the comment "A woman was being attack by one of those things and when the other villagers ran over to save her there were two of beasts and the woman was gone." All those shadow beast you killed were the NPCs... Link killed a lot of people. lol

Well, The Wind Waker has many, many more sidequests then TPs. At least 5 times as many...

And TWW had a great story, and the ending was the best part! Just because you don't like Hyrule being flooded, doesn't mean the ending was crap. It's the best ending in the series.

Yeah I know, but it wouldn't have hurt the storyline to add a few more survivors in or perhaps migrants from Hyryle castle in, would it? I can't spend a lot of time in Kakariko mainly for that reason: there's just not enough people neither occupied houses. I like going in and out of houses, occasionally getting given stuff. It just adds a spark to the game.

Twilight Princess's sidequests were crap because they consisted only of tedious collect-o-thans and giving people rupees. Unlike the OoT's trading quests, or any of Majora's Mask's side-quests, TP's sidequests were shallow distractions from the main quest that offered no depth or extra insight into Hyrule. No characters were developed, Hyrule didn't seem to become a better place, few character's outside the main cast were explored, and they just weren't fun to do.

While TP may have more items and skills, the Nintendo games take far more advantage of the game's engine. Especially Majora's Mask. Why? Puzzles and enemies actually require you to know how to use wha
