Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
Anybody else notice how slow the game gets when Link is in Deku Form or when you're fighting a boss (especially noticable against Odowala)? At first I didn't think much of it, but then the game skipped a frame....and froze! Anyone else experience these kinds of problems?

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
Majoras Mask version on Collectors Edition is really glitchy.
It's like that for everybody. There's nothing you can do. It's best to play the N64 version, the graphics may be worse but the problems in the GameCube version can get really annoying. Especially when you can only save at certain points in Majora - So there's a high risk off losing a lot of progress. |

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
I especially notice some pretty bad slow down in South Clocktown right when you get out of the gate. I can't remember if it was that bad in the N64 version or not.

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
The game's framerate is crappy because it's being emulated at a higher resolution than it was intended to without any optimisation. The original Nintendo 64 game ran at 320x240, and the GameCube version runs at 640x480, plus anti-aliasing. That accounts for the lower framerate.
The game is still easily playable, though. The poor framerate never gets in the way, and the improved GameCube controller (minus the C-buttons) and the higher screen resolution make up for it in my opinion. |

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
You guys got my curiosity going now. I played both of these games on N64, but never got around to trying them on GC. I'm gonna have to go try it now. I think I'll play OoT first. No wait, maybe MM first to see how bad the glitches are. Oot or MM first? Hmm.
*goes running to the GC pulling hair out on the way*

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
The constant freezing on MM CE is due to the Gamecube trying to do a divide by zero error (I looked at the log of CPU instructions with a debug device). Some consoles are more prone to freezing than others - my old GC would freeze at least 3 times per game when playing MM, my new GC freezes much less (about once every 5 games).
The MM save system angered me at first, but I found a way round it. You can indeed copy your owl save file to the other slot (like that trick in the original N64 version) but since the GC blacks out and does its 'saving' routine when you delete, when you copy AND when you start again, it can get annoying. The way round it is quite simple. Save at an owl statue as normal. Then when you come to play the game again, press Start to bring up the file select screen. On that screen, WITHOUT turning the power off, remove the memory card. Then start the game as normal. It'll say you cannot save, but just select Yes to continue. If the game freezes up while playing, you can reset and re-insert the memory card - and your owl save will still be there! If you want to save after doing this trick, simply re-insert the memory card (with power on) before going to the owl statue or playing the Song of Time. The game will act like you never removed the card in the first place, and will save properly! I had to do this all the time with my old GC (which I nicknamed the FreezeCube). Even with this trick, I still had to do the mini-boss of the Great Bay temple 5 times! I'd defeat the boss, get the Ice Arrow, then the game would freeze before I could Soar out and get back to the owl statue ![]() I nearly threw my GC away in frustration when on the first 3-day cycle where you couldn't save. If it froze there, you had to start from the beginning (Link going through the forest on Epona) all over again! Imagine - get up to the top of Clock Tower, get the Ocarina back, flashback of Zelda, and *FREEZE*. NOOOOOOOO! |

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
I've posted this a few times now. I completed all of the bottom of the well (after colelcting varios items in bottles in advance!) reached Ikana Castle. I shot a swining mine, it swang, exploded on a skulltula and froze the game!
The frame rate is quite slow at times, but it generally doesn't bother me.

Well, it froze again today but I hadn't gone that far for it to be a big problem.

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
Yeah, MM freezes up for me a lot on the Gamecube. Probably another side effect from transfering it from its N64 version. Who cares about sound irregularities? It's the freezing that really gets us! I haven't heard one person complain about the music being jacked up in little ways, it's all about the game freezing, and honestly, I don't blame them!

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
Strange, my MM doesn't freeze on me, it only froze on me once or twice, but I was cheating and that's what made it freeze.

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
I never encountered any problems really except for the slowdown at south clocktown when you boot the file up-that and the loading during the ending (you know when it says Dawn of a new day or something like that...) but never a freeze-nothing that ruined the experience-I DO plan on buying the N64 version of MM anyways mainly for collector value *yes I am a game collecter-AND player* (and I can still find a new one here
we have an AMAZING used/old game shops) but just wondering-does the N64 version run THAT MUCH better? cuz if not im not gonna open the new N64 copy...(and yeah I know I need the expansion pak and I have one already so im set)

Re: Massive Frame Rate Issues in MM/Collector's Edition
i have never expierienced a problem. not with MM anyways. although, with OoTMQ, everytime i beat the spirit temple, then save and quit from a day's worth of hard core gaming, the save will have corrupted the next day! and yes i have MM for both format's, and it definitely runs smooth on N64. plus, if you keep the box and game in mint condition, then, in a few year's, it'll sell well to any collector.
