Use Din's Fire. Once you run out of magic be persistant with your sword. Let him hit you and then hit him while he's recovering.

As mentioned above, Din's Fire is the simplest way to defeat him. You could fill your bottles with the magic restoring potion (I forgot the color). Just use Din's Fire until your magic is exhausted, refill your magic with the potion, and repeat. Another, more challenging way of deafeating him is to use the Megaton Hammer. Sometimes Shadow Link won't be able to block it, and if luck prevails you should be able to get into a rhythm of sorts. Good luck. Just keep trying. Persistence pays off, and eventually you'll find a good method that works for you.

They serve as a nifty little extra and a way to get people to use the Tingle Tuner. I enjoy throwing them in the ocean at times and listening to Knuckle complain. It's an entertaining little sidequest if you're bored, but it doesn't really have any affect on the story or anything.
