Only Two Shields T_T?
Ocarina of Time had 3 shields to collect, and each of them could be used at different times. I liked that - As a child you could run around wif a massive metal board on your back and duck for cover when enemies approached or you could use the Deku Shield which looked a lot more... professional? Not to mention it was a lot easier to move around when the Deku Shield was equipped, since wif the Hylian shield you couldn't move and guard at the same time.
And then as an Adult you could use the Hylian like a proper Shield or the Mirror shield, which was basically the same as Hylian save the light reflecting powers. In my opinion, the mirror shield looked awesome and the hylian shield looked awesome, so when I got bored of looking at one I switched. CAN'T DO THAT IN WIND WAKER! Besides the fact there there are only TWO shields in Wind Waker, what annoys me even more is you can't switch back and forth between the two whenever you got bored of one. In OoT, switching from the MIrror shield to the Hylian shield was probably a step down, no matter how slight of one it was, but at least the option was available. I get real bored of looking at the Blue and White thing on my cel-shaded Link's back for hours on end in WW. And even though the Hero's shield isn't as attractive as the Mirror Shield in WW, it would still be nice to have a bit of variety. Even so, I reckon they should have made at least ONE other shield to collect. Can't complain about there only being Two swords to collect, though, since the Master sword has three stages (but still can't be considered a new sword) AND killing enemies would usually provide a nice big Sword or Spear or Machette or... Stick... Well, look on the bright side - at least you could set it on fire? |

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
Well, it would have been cool to get the Hylian shield. Maybe have a cool story behind it. A shield that was from Hyrule before it flooded and the person that gives it to you would have a nice epic story to tell. A shield passed down from generation to generation. OR maybe you could have goten it when you aquired the master sword, that would have been a nice reference to OOTl.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
LoZ had only two shields, what's the problem? Personally I didn't really like the switching in OoT. Young Link looked silly with that enormous shield, I hated it when some people saved my game with him wearing that piece of metal. Yuk.
Also what's the problem with having scary-looking shields? There are many shields in real life that have scary motifs and styles. I'd much rather have a scary looking shield than a Mickey Mouse shield.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
People complain about the Wind Waker's ease and yet they want more shields...how ironic...
Although I see your point. A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, and Ocarina of Time all had three shields. That's a good amount, and it's in the majority compared to other shield amounts (The Wind Waker, The Minish Cap and The Legend of Zelda having two; Adventure of Link, Four Swords, and Four Swords Adventures having one). But compared to how hard the game is, a third shield would be too much. And the changing? That's ridiculous. There is no point to changing them. I may have liked Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid: Fusion more if I could turn things on and off like in Super Metroid, but that's not how it was, and the only reason it was good in Super Metroid was because of the power bomb charge combos, which could not be done in Fusion and Zero Mission without changing parts of them. |

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
I didn't like either of the shields in WW, they looked okay, but were hardly anything interesting. The two mirror shields in OoT/MM looked different, which was good, even if I loved the crescent moon best.

After all, why would you want to switch to some crappy piece of wood and metal when you can carry one giant probably 1.5 inch thick piece of metal that's extremely shiny?

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
Oh, please. People will find any difference between OoT and WW and blindly praise it these days.
Who gives a crap about switching shields? They're exactly the same! You got bored of it? Why are you staring at your shield? And the Hylian Shield was useless as a child except for blocking rocks. If shields actually did something different, I would agree with you. But it's Deku Shield for child (Hylian is useless) and Hylian/Mirror for adult.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
You know, I'd have to say, I don't give a damn about shields. In tWW, the only time I used my shield to block was in the battle with Ganondorf. Who cares about switching? Also, given the length of the game, if they put three shields in, it would seem like they tried to cram too much equipment in.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
I don't really care at all. I like both shields, and the Mirror looks really cool. Besides, I don't spend my time looking at Link's back for hours in WW, OoT, or MM.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
I liked the mirror sheild enough, and I never wanted to switch. Of course, I don't do that in OoT either, but I don't see it all as that big of a deal. They could have thrown another shield in between the crappy heros and the almighty mirror.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
I don't care about the amount of shields, more shields wouldn't have filled any purpose.
Though... I'd have really loved to be able to switch shields, 'cause then I wouldn't have to waste a whole save file just to be able to be able to watch that Hylian shield. Seriously! And if I'm not completely wrong, the mirror shield couldn't reflect Octorock bullets, which kinda makes Hero better. Contrary to what everyone else says I think it's the most beautifull shield EVER to appear in a Zelda game, with the mirror shield in Majoras Mask as a close second. No, I'm not ironic. I'd have also loved to be able to switch swords, I got annoyed by that plastic sword when it started shining.

Re: Only Two Shields T_T?
Hmmm....I could have sworn that in Majora's Mask there were only 2 shields and once you get the Mirror shield you couldn't switch...hmm...
Well, I better go burn that game along with Windwaker..seriously, you guys are really really picky about your Zelda games, and I wish that all the hate wasn't pointed toward WindWaker, that game was awesome. |
